Tom Noonan, the actor, playwright and filmmaker known for playing Francis Dolarhyde in Manhunter and Cain in RoboCop 2, died on February 14, 2026, at age 74. His death was publicly reported on February 18. A cause of death was not disclosed in the reporting.
Who was Tom Noonan?
Noonan was an American actor and filmmaker whose screen presence could make frightening characters feel recognizably human. “Making ‘bad people’ seem human is the key to making them scary,” he said, according to The Guardian’s obituary.

Though many viewers remember him for imposing antagonists, his work extended well beyond those parts: he was also a playwright, theatre actor, writer and director.

Francis Dolarhyde in Manhunter
In Michael Mann’s 1986 film Manhunter, adapted from Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon, Noonan played Francis Dolarhyde, known as the Tooth Fairy. The role’s menace was bound up with emotional complexity, rather than presented as a simple screen monster.

Cain in RoboCop 2
Noonan played Cain in the 1990 science-fiction sequel RoboCop 2. Cain’s transformation into the mechanized RoboCain gave Noonan a very different kind of villain to embody: a larger-than-life figure against Dolarhyde’s more inward menace.

- Kelso in Michael Mann’s Heat (1995).
- More than 40 voiced roles in Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion film Anomalisa (2015), according to The Guardian.
Noonan as a playwright and filmmaker
Buried Child
Noonan originated the role of Tilden in the first production of Sam Shepard’s play Buried Child in 1978, establishing an important part of his career on the stage as well as on screen.
What Happened Was…
Noonan wrote and directed the 1994 film What Happened Was…, adapted from his own play. The Guardian reports that the film won two Sundance prizes. The project reflects a side of his work that his most famous villain roles can obscure: he created stories and shaped performances as well as appearing in them.
When did Tom Noonan die?
Noonan died on February 14, 2026, aged 74. The Guardian reported that The Monster Squad director Fred Dekker confirmed his death; actor Karen Sillas, Noonan’s collaborator on What Happened Was…, also paid tribute. Variety reported that Dekker and Sillas announced the death. The cause was not immediately disclosed.
