Why Woody’s return matters to the film
Hanks voices Woody, one of the franchise’s central characters. Disney’s D23 feature describes Toy Story 5 as an adventure in which the toys respond to technology’s changing role in childhood. The new character Lilypad, a tablet voiced by Greta Lee, challenges the toys’ place in Bonnie’s life. Director Andrew Stanton and co-director Kenna Harris wrote the screenplay, and Lindsey Collins produced the film. D23’s film feature
Stanton has described the series’ appeal as watching a changing world through toys who do not age: “The toys don’t really age, but the world does.” That perspective gives the new tablet conflict a natural connection to the franchise’s ongoing themes of childhood, growing up and moving on.

How the technology premise developed
In a June 18, 2026 feature, The Walt Disney Company quoted co-director Kenna Harris explaining that the technology storyline changed during development. “From the beginning, we knew we wanted to include tech,” she said. Rather than frame technology as simply good or bad, the story evolved around the reality that it is not going away—and the toys may have to share Bonnie’s world with Lilypad.
