Yes, Bob Dylan is reported to have said he kicked a heroin habit in New York City. The statement comes from a March 1966 interview with the critic Robert Shelton, recorded on Dylan’s private plane and made public in 2011. The reports establish what Dylan said on that recording. They do not independently establish the clinical details of any addiction or the full history of his drug use.
What Dylan is reported to have said
ABC News and The Guardian both report the same first-person passage from the interview:
“I kicked a heroin habit in New York City. I got very, very strung out for a while, I mean really, very strung out. And I kicked the habit. I had about a $25-a-day habit and I kicked it.”
The $25-a-day figure is Dylan’s own description in the interview. It is not a measured statistic, and the 2011 reports do not say how long that level of spending lasted or what it would amount to today. Keep the quotation attributed to the 1966 recording as reported in 2011.

Where the recording came from
ABC News reports that the interview was recorded in March 1966 aboard Dylan’s private plane as it travelled from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Denver. Dylan was 24. Shelton was a friend and critic who later wrote Dylan’s biography.
The Guardian reports that the tapes had not been heard publicly before. They were found during research for a revised edition of Shelton’s 1986 book No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan. Excerpts were broadcast on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on 23 May 2011.

What the evidence does and does not establish
The claim rests on a small set of sources, and each one supports a different part of the story.
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dylan’s first-person statement on the recording, as quoted by ABC News and The Guardian in 2011 | Dylan said in 1966 that he had kicked a heroin habit in New York City | A clinical diagnosis, how long any habit lasted, or any treatment |
| Agreement between the 2011 reports | The recording existed, Shelton made it in March 1966, and it contains this statement | Direct examination of the full recording; press reports are not a substitute for it |
| Commentary, including Deborah Orr’s piece in The Guardian | Some listeners regarded the revelation as unsurprising | Anything as corroboration of the claim; it is opinion, not evidence |
| Independent medical or documentary records | Not stated in the 2011 reports | Not stated in the 2011 reports |
| A second first-person account of the same habit | Not stated in the 2011 reports | Not stated in the 2011 reports |
Public rumour about Dylan’s drug use, and retrospective readings of his songs, do not add to this evidence. They should not be cited as confirmation.

“Did Bob Dylan say he was addicted to heroin?”
The reports support a narrower answer: Dylan is reported to have described a heroin habit that became serious enough that he got “very, very strung out,” and to have said he quit. Whether he was “addicted” in a clinical sense is not a term the 1966 quotation uses, and the reports do not supply one.
“Was Bob Dylan a heroin addict?”
This question asks for a clinical fact. The sources available in 2011 establish that Dylan made a self-description on tape. They do not provide medical records, a second account from someone who witnessed the habit, or a timeline. A factual answer therefore has to rest on his own account, reported accurately and not expanded beyond it.

Shelton’s No Direction Home is the natural place to find background on Dylan’s early career and on the circumstances in which the tapes were found. Treat it as context for the discovery and for Dylan’s early years rather than as independent proof of the heroin statement. Check the current edition and availability before buying a copy.
