Here is the chronology, based on contemporaneous reporting.
When did Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes start dating?
Entertainment and news reports place Cruise and Holmes’s public relationship in April 2005. E! dates their first public appearance as a couple in Rome to that month, and CBS also reports that they began dating in April. This establishes when their courtship became public, not the exact beginning of a private relationship. E!, CBS News, and the Los Angeles Times place the romance in 2005.

May 2005: The Oprah appearance
In May, Cruise appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and jumped on the couch while talking about Holmes. The moment became one of the most visible public episodes of their courtship. E!

E! reports that Cruise and Holmes announced in October that they were expecting a child. E!

Suri’s birth and the wedding
April 2006: Their daughter is born
E!’s chronology dates the birth of their daughter, Suri, to April 2006. ABC News also identifies Suri as their daughter in its 2012 coverage of the divorce. E!; ABC News
November 18, 2006: They marry in Italy
E! dates the wedding to November 18, 2006, at Odescalchi Castle in Italy. ABC News independently described the November wedding as taking place at an Italian castle. E!; ABC News

How and when did the marriage end?
June 28–29, 2012: Holmes files for divorce
E! dates Holmes’s filing to June 28. ABC News reported the divorce on June 29 and confirmed that Holmes had filed. Her attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, described it as “a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.” Cruise’s representative said, “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.” These were statements from representatives, not direct interviews with either person. July 2012: A settlement is reported
Less than two weeks after the filing, ABC News reported that they had reached a settlement. Their joint statement said, “We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests.” The report did not disclose the settlement’s terms. ABC News

August 2012: The divorce is finalized
In August, RTÉ reported that the divorce had been finalized, citing court-record reporting. The couple’s joint statement, reproduced in the report, continued: “We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.” RTÉ
