Cal Thresher’s men damage Dwight’s wind-farm project in Season 2, Episode 5, “Tilting at Windmills.” The most solid explanation is practical: the attack slows Dwight down and costs him time and money. The episode also works as a warning, and as a move in Cal’s contest with Jackie Ming. Those readings are interpretations of the scene, not statements of intent from the show’s creators or cast.
What the attack actually does
The concrete result comes first. Dwight’s wind-farm project is set back, and recovering from the damage will take both time and money. According to an episode breakdown published by Its Prime Media on October 14, 2024, this delay is the strongest supported reason for the attack. A project that depends on schedules, crews and funding loses ground every day it sits idle, so a delay can hurt more than the physical damage itself.
Why it reads as a warning
Beyond the delay, the attack carries a message. The same breakdown argues that Cal is showing Dwight’s crew that they cannot relax, even on a job that seems secure. Keep the wording tentative: the episode suggests a warning, and the attack can be read as one, but no creator or actor is cited confirming that this was the goal.
The Jackie Ming angle
The second layer concerns Jackie Ming. The breakdown reads the attack as a power play that runs through Jackie’s position. Using workers without Jackie’s consent is the detail that makes this reading work: it challenges Jackie’s authority without requiring Cal to make a direct move against him. That is a reading of the story’s subtext, not a fact the episode spells out, so present it as what the attack suggests about the power struggle.

The wine gift and the date
Cal’s wine arrives while Dwight and Margaret are on a date, so the pressure from Dwight’s business reaches his private life. The breakdown reads the gesture as an attempt to drive a wedge between Dwight and Margaret, and it notes that Margaret has already shown frustration with the conflict. This is a plausible interpretation of the scene. It is not confirmed as Cal’s motive, and the episode does not show Cal explaining it.
Cal and Bill Bevilaqua’s phone call
A phone conversation between Cal and Bill Bevilaqua reveals a past working relationship that has since ended. The breakdown reports that Bill wanted out and that a Chinese gang took his place. It does not explain what caused the break, and the available sources do not fill that gap. Treat the history as context and avoid presenting a cause the episode leaves open.
