That number is a third-party estimate. The page does not show how it was calculated, and no public financial disclosure or independently auditable statement was found to confirm it. The only hard pay figures on record come from 1981 salary reporting, which describes what he earned then, not what he is worth now.
Where the $85 million figure comes from
Celebrity Net Worth gives two numbers for Brokaw: a net worth of $85 million and a salary of $5 million. Both are that outlet’s estimates. The page is undated beyond being accessed in 2026, and it does not explain the period the salary covers, the assets and liabilities behind the net worth, or the method used to reach either figure.
That makes the $85 million a useful search result but not a verified fact. If you repeat it, label it as Celebrity Net Worth’s estimate and date it to the page you consulted.
What is documented about his pay
The clearest earnings evidence is historical. A July 21, 1981 Washington Post profile by Tom Shales reported that Brokaw’s salary alone was at least $1.2 million per year. The same profile said published reports put his compensation as high as $2 million per year. Brokaw did not confirm either figure in the piece.

These numbers describe his contract context in 1981. They say nothing reliable about the decades since, including later salary, royalties, investments, property, or debts. Salary is also not the same thing as net worth: income in a given year is one input to accumulated wealth, not a measure of it.
The profile includes a line from Brokaw that is often cited as a comment on his good fortune:
Rank #2
“I never expected this kind of material wealth to come my way as a result of getting into this business.”
Cite that quote to the Washington Post profile, and note that it is from 1981.

Why his career history does not settle the question
Brokaw’s career explains why wealth estimates attract interest, but it does not support any particular dollar figure. The sources that are available establish the following:
- NBC career start: The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis profile says his NBC career began in 1966.
- Nightly News tenure: The Television Academy says he anchored and managed NBC Nightly News for 22 years, from 1982 to 2004.
- Authorship: The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis profile notes seven published books, including The Greatest Generation.
Duration of employment and a body of published work tell you about a career, not about assets, debts, royalties, or investments. Nothing in these sources reports his current property holdings, investment portfolio, book income, or contract terms after 1981.
Rank #4
If you want to read his work, The Greatest Generation is the book Biography.com describes as a bestseller, with a 1998 publication date. It is a reasonable read for anyone interested in his history writing, but it tells you nothing about his finances.

| $85 million | Total net worth (estimate) | Celebrity Net Worth, undated page accessed in 2026 | Not stated: no calculation, asset or liability statement, or primary disclosure |
| $5 million | Salary (estimate) | Celebrity Net Worth, same undated page | Not stated: the period covered is not explained |
| At least $1.2 million per year | Salary alone, 1981 contract context | The Washington Post, July 21, 1981 profile by Tom Shales | Press reporting; Brokaw did not confirm the figure in the profile |
| Up to $2 million per year | Compensation as reported in published accounts, 1981 | The Washington Post, July 21, 1981 profile by Tom Shales | Reported by the paper as coming from published reports; not confirmed by Brokaw |
No two well-supported, current net-worth estimates were found that can be compared responsibly. Do not average or blend the 1981 salary reports with the current net-worth estimate. They measure different things across different decades.
Quick Recap
How to cite the figure accurately
- Name the source. Write “Celebrity Net Worth estimates” rather than “Tom Brokaw is worth.”
- Specify the measure. Say whether you mean net worth or salary, because the two are reported separately.
- Date the number. The $85 million estimate is from an undated page accessed in 2026. The salary reports are from 1981.
- Do not extend 1981 pay to today. Income at one contract does not establish later earnings.
- Do not imply knowledge of current holdings, investments, debts, royalties, or contract terms, none of which the available sources report.
