A 2023 retelling of an earlier report says Tom Cruise’s minder asked staff not to touch his hair during a May 2017 Australian TV appearance. The account describes one specific promotional event; it does not establish a rule Cruise follows at every public appearance.
What reportedly happened
The incident was said to take place when Cruise appeared on the Australian television program The Project in May 2017 to promote The Mummy. According to the account, a hair and makeup artist tried to tame a loose strand, and a minder told her to step away.

The reported instruction was that staff should not touch Cruise’s hair unless he was in private. It was attributed to the minder—not presented as a direct statement from Cruise.
How firmly is the story established?
The accessible account is a YourTango article published January 14, 2023. It attributes the anecdote to The Daily Telegraph, “per Daily Mail.” The original report was not independently reviewed, and no named person or official source was found directly confirming the alleged rule. The careful conclusion is therefore that a minder reportedly set this boundary during one appearance, not that Cruise has confirmed a universal rule about his hair.

Does other coverage confirm it?
A September 15, 2026 GQ interview discusses Cruise’s career and film work but does not confirm this anecdote. Its silence neither verifies nor disproves the report.
TheWrap also reported in 2015 that an unnamed source described limits on questions about Cruise’s personal life and Scientology during a promotional tour. A Comedy Central spokesperson, however, said Jon Stewart’s Daily Show interview had no restrictions on questions. That separate reporting concerns publicity conditions, not the hair incident, and does not corroborate it.
