The most recent trade report, from Screen International, says the film shot earlier in 2026 around Mexico City and is now in post-production. No release date, festival premiere or streaming home has been reported.
Where the production stands now
The latest reporting describes a completed shoot and an editing phase. Earlier coverage was forward-looking, so the chronology matters: a February announcement said filming was about to begin, and later reports confirmed it had happened.
- Current status: post-production, according to Screen International’s most recent update.
- Shooting: took place earlier in 2026, centred on Mexico City, with additional work in Cananea, Sonora.
- Release: no date, festival plan or distributor-announced viewing window has been reported.
The Screen International article itself could not be checked directly; its status is taken from the summary of that report, so treat the post-production label as the most recent reporting rather than a confirmed schedule.
How the timeline unfolded
| Date | Source | What it reported | Status type |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 2026 | TheWrap | Recounted that the project had stalled in 2024 after Joaquin Phoenix left five days before production was due to begin. | Background |
| February 5, 2026 | Variety | Confirmed Pedro Pascal in the lead, MK2 Films financing and handling international sales, and said shooting would start the following month. | Announced plan |
| April 3, 2026 | EL PAÍS | Documented Pascal filming in Mexico City, including locations around the Historic Center, and crew work in Cananea, Sonora. | Observed production |
| Later in 2026 | Screen International | Reported that filming had taken place earlier in 2026 and that the film had moved into post-production. | Most recent status |
The April on-set report is older than the Screen International update, so it describes filming in progress, not the current state of the project.

The story and the cast
De Noche is set in 1930s Los Angeles. Variety describes a love affair between a hard-boiled detective and a younger boarding-school teacher. The city’s corruption and the approach of war put the two men in danger and force them to flee to Mexico.
- Pedro Pascal plays the detective.
- Danny Ramirez plays the boarding-school teacher.
- Todd Haynes directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Raymond.
- Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films are among the producers.
Haynes framed the film in terms of its period and present. As Variety printed his words: “This story, with Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez in the two leads, arises out of an era — all too relevant to our own — of domestic corruption, racial exploitation and global terror.”

The revived version was reported with Pascal confirmed in the lead. MK2 Films is financing the production and is reported to handle its international sales. Variety’s report did not specify a financing split or budget, so none is stated here.
