This page covers the New York Times Pips puzzle dated Wednesday, October 1, 2025. It does not reproduce that day’s board layouts, hints or final domino placements, because we could not check them against the game or a complete archive. What follows explains the rules that govern every Pips board, a method for working through one step by step, and where to look for a verified solution to that specific date.
Which puzzle this is
The title omits the year. October 1 fell on a Wednesday in 2025, so the puzzle this title refers to is the Pips board published for that date. Pips is part of the New York Times games lineup and is played online or in the NYT Games app. Puzzles from earlier dates may or may not remain available in your account, so check the game’s own archive before assuming you can reopen this one.
What verified answers are available
An October 1, 2025 hints-and-answers article appeared in Yahoo Tech search results under the headline “NYT Pips hints, answers for October 1, 2025.” We could not open that article, so we cannot confirm what it says. Treat it as a pointer to the date, not as checked content. For a plain-language gameplay walkthrough, Tom’s Guide published Kaycee Hill’s explainer “The New York Times has dropped a new puzzle game — here’s how to play Pips” on August 31, 2025. It predates the October board and covers the mechanics rather than that day’s answers.
How a Pips board works
A Pips board is a grid of cells that must be covered completely by dominoes. Each domino has two halves, and each half covers exactly one cell. Every cell is covered once, with no overlaps and no gaps. The board is divided into colored regions, and each region carries a rule about the numbers that the covering halves may show.

The rules you will meet most often are these:
| Region rule | What it requires | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Exact sum | The pips in the region add up to a stated total. | Add the values of every covered cell in the region and compare with the target. |
| Equal values | Every cell in the region shows the same value. | Compare each covered cell with the first one you placed in the region. |
| Distinct values | No two cells in the region may show the same value. | Scan the region for any repeated number. |
| Sum above a threshold | The total must exceed a stated number. | Add the values and confirm the total is higher than the threshold. |
| Sum below a threshold | The total must stay under a stated number. | Add the values and confirm the total is lower than the threshold. |
| Uncolored cells | No special mathematical condition in the cited gameplay guide. | Only the domino-covering rule applies. |
Read the symbol on each region and check whether it applies to the total of the region or to each individual value. Many wrong placements come from treating a sum rule as a per-cell rule, or the reverse.
Difficulty levels
The game offers Easy, Medium and Hard boards. Each level differs in three ways you can compare directly on the board in front of you:
Rank #2
- 28 piece set of dominoes to teach time skills
- Thick plastic dominoes make manipulation easy to play the game
- Collectors tin for easy storage
- Complete time games
- Children will love the feel of learning with a real domino
- Board layout: the shape and size of the grid.
- Regions: how many regions there are and which rule types they use.
- Domino inventory: which dominoes you have available to place.
We have not compared the October 1 boards at each level, so this article makes no claim about which level was harder that day.
A method for solving any Pips board
- Read every region rule before placing anything. Note the target sum, threshold, or whether values must match or differ.
- Count the cells in each region. A small region with a tight rule constrains the dominoes that can cover it.
- Start with the most restrictive region. Exact sums on small regions usually narrow the options fastest.
- Track the domino inventory. Each domino can be used once, so a value you have already spent elsewhere may be unavailable.
- Test a placement against its neighbours. A domino that satisfies its own region can still break an adjacent region.
- Backtrack when a region cannot be completed. If no remaining domino fits a region’s rule, undo the last placement that touched it and try another option.
Why some boards take a long time
A 2025 paper by Alberti and colleagues, Man, these New York Times games are hard! A computational perspective (arXiv:2509.10846, posted September 13, 2025), models Pips as a tiling problem with equality, inequality, exact-sum and threshold-sum constraints. It proves that a generalized version of the Pips solvability problem is NP-complete, including a restricted case in which tile values are only 0 or 1 and the constraints are equality or exact-sum rules.

That result concerns the general problem across all possible boards. It does not show that the October 1, 2025 board is impossible or unusually difficult, and it does not establish how long any individual player will take.
