Carol and Daryl’s reunion offers a moment of relief; the episode then puts that companionship beside fresh grief, as Isabelle asks Daryl to look after Laurent.
“The Book of Carol: Le Paradis Pour Toi” is Season 2, Episode 4 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. It aired October 20, 2024; AMC+ lists its runtime as 1 hour 5 minutes. The title is emotionally direct, and the episode earns it through the consequences of its central loss rather than through surprise alone.
Isabelle’s death gives the episode its emotional center
Pouvoir attacks the Nest, bringing the conflict into the fragile refuge where Isabelle and Laurent have been living. Isabelle confronts Losang, and he fatally stabs her. The scene is the episode’s decisive turn: her death is not just another escalation in the siege, but a loss that changes what Daryl must carry forward.
In her final moments, Isabelle asks Daryl to make sure Laurent is okay. That request gives his search for the boy a more intimate urgency. Daryl’s connection with Isabelle has become deeply meaningful, and the grief he shows makes that bond unmistakable. The episode supports reading their relationship as one of love, but it does not need to settle a label for the loss to matter.

Carol and Daryl’s reunion is relief, not resolution
Carol and Daryl reunite tearfully, restoring the partnership at the heart of the series. But the timing refuses an easy reunion-as-reward: Isabelle’s final moments and request follow, placing a new responsibility alongside the comfort of finding each other again.
That contrast is the episode’s strongest dramatic choice. The reunion does not cancel the grief, and Isabelle’s death does not make the reunion feel irrelevant. Instead, Daryl has to continue with Carol while carrying a promise to Isabelle and the uncertainty of what will happen to Laurent.
Rank #2

Shocks keep the story moving—but not every turn has equal weight
The episode moves quickly through a string of major events: Pouvoir attacks the Nest, Isabelle confronts Losang and dies, Genet also dies, and the closing setup points toward a new threat focused on Laurent. That pace creates momentum and keeps the season’s separate conflicts converging.
Its best shocks have consequences beyond their immediate impact. Isabelle’s death changes Daryl’s emotional stakes and makes Laurent’s safety personal. Genet’s death adds another sharp turn, while the threat around Laurent gives the story a clear next direction. The episode is less interested in lingering over each transition than in pressing the characters into what comes next; that urgency is energizing, though it can leave some turns feeling more like propulsion than reflection.

Is it the season’s best episode?
As a personal verdict, yes—so far. Episode 4 stands out because the shocks converge on a meaningful character change: Daryl’s search is now tied to a promise made in grief, while Carol’s return gives him a companion for the road ahead. The performances and the reunion-to-loss contrast supply the emotional force; the rapid succession of deaths supplies the momentum.
That ranking is not a critical consensus. Rotten Tomatoes displays four critic reviews on the episode page, too small and mixed a sample to establish a definitive season-wide ranking. Ben Rosenstock of New York Magazine/Vulture gave the episode 4/5, praising its shock value and plot momentum while noting it did not reach the heights of The Walking Dead at its best. CBR’s Katie Doll listed a 5/10. The spread fits an episode whose pace and turns may thrill some viewers while feeling compressed to others.
