That makes the assigned title’s present-tense claim outdated. Swift’s announcement and the Associated Press report confirm the buyback, but the purchase agreement and a detailed rights schedule have not been reviewed here.
Who owns Taylor Swift’s old catalog now?
Swift said the music she had made “now belongs… to me.” The Associated Press identified Shamrock Capital as the catalog’s most recent owner before the buyback and reported that Swift had repurchased it. The available reporting establishes the announcement and the prior owner; it does not establish whether a later transfer took place after May 30, 2025.

Swift’s official letter named music videos, concert films, album art, photography and unreleased songs along with her music. Those are the assets she described as part of the purchase; the legal schedule of assets in the transaction has not been established. The purchase price was not disclosed, according to the AP.
How did the catalog reach Shamrock?
Swift’s first six albums were recorded for Big Machine. By November 2020, the early catalog had passed through Scooter Braun’s company to Shamrock Capital. In a contemporaneous account reported by CBS News and AFP, Swift said she had tried to regain control and that her team learned about the Shamrock purchase after the sale.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
Swift described the assets announced by Shamrock at the time as including her music, videos and album art. That description was hers; it does not establish the precise legal assets transferred in 2020. The 2020 reporting also mentioned a $300 million figure in connection with coverage of that earlier sale. It is not the disclosed price of Swift’s 2025 repurchase.
What did Swift buy back, and how is it different from Taylor’s Version?
Swift’s announcement described a collection broader than sound recordings, naming visual and archival materials as well as unreleased songs. The AP identifies the six early albums as the catalog at issue. The sources do not provide a contract or rights schedule that would settle the precise legal scope of the buyback.

- The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th
Swift later rerecorded and released four of the early albums as Taylor’s Version, including Fearless (Taylor’s Version). The original recordings and the Taylor’s Version releases are distinct recordings and releases. Ownership claims about the original recordings should not be extended to songwriting or publishing rights: the available sources do not examine those rights or define them in the purchase agreement.
Why did Swift rerecord her early albums?
Swift credited fan support for the rerecorded albums and the Eras Tour with enabling her to buy back her music. That is her explanation of how those successes contributed; the purchase price and financing details were not disclosed in the AP report, and her statement does not quantify their role in funding the deal.

She also described the buyback as a major personal milestone, writing, “To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it.”
