Natalia Dyer did not declare Nancy “Team Steve” or “Team Jonathan.” In a November 2025 interview, she said Nancy and Steve care about each other, but their bond need not turn romantic—and suggested the danger surrounding them mattered more than high-school romance. The completed series later gives Nancy an independent ending rather than pairing her with either man.
What did Natalia Dyer say about Nancy’s love triangle?
In a November 26, 2025 Netflix Tudum interview, Dyer discussed the relationship tension in the context of Season 4, before the final season had aired. She described Nancy and Steve’s renewed connection as meaningful without insisting it must be romantic: “It doesn’t necessarily have to be a romantic thing.”
Dyer also redirected attention from choosing between the two men to the crisis facing the characters. Asked whether Nancy should focus on Steve or Jonathan, she said, “There’s a lot of things going on, and I don’t know if that sort of high school romance thing is as important as everything else.” Her answer acknowledged Nancy’s feelings without naming a preferred partner: “But, yeah, I think there are things about both Steve and Jonathan that Nancy really likes.”
Did Dyer choose Steve or Jonathan?
No. Her remarks do not amount to a declaration for either character. She recognizes Nancy’s affection for both and leaves open the possibility that her connection with Steve can matter without becoming a romance. That is more nuanced than the fan shorthand of a “Team Steve vs. Team Jonathan” choice.

- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
How does the series finale resolve Nancy’s relationships?
The finale supplies an outcome that Dyer’s earlier interview could not. In a January 2, 2026 Netflix Tudum interview, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer say Nancy and Jonathan are not together at the end. Matt Duffer explains Nancy’s independent path: “She’s still trying to find herself and what she wants from the world, so that’s why we wanted to give her that ending.”
The creators also describe Steve and Jonathan’s resolution as a matter of their relationship with each other: they wanted the two men to find common ground and talk through their feelings and conflict as it relates to Nancy. The finale therefore does not leave the earlier romantic question suspended as a choice between two suitors; it gives Nancy room to pursue what she wants while resolving the men’s conflict.

What did Dyer say about Nancy’s choices in 2022?
An earlier comment offers context, but not a substitute for the finale. In an August 12, 2022 report on The Tonight Show, Dyer called Nancy’s choices human, even when they were not always the most morally right, and suggested she needed some “me time.” That remark predates the 2025 Tudum interview and the completed series; it should not be read as a statement about Nancy’s final romantic status.
