In the 1986 film Top Gun, screenwriters Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. created the callsigns as character placeholders that stayed in the movie. Epps said Maverick and Iceman were meant to represent their personalities, and that Viper was named after real Navy technical advisor Pete Pettigrew. For most of the other names, the creators’ specific explanations have not been documented in the available interview.
Who created the callsigns?
Co-screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. said he and Jim Cash came up with the film’s callsigns. He recalled that he chose Maverick and Iceman because the names represented the characters’ personalities; Cash came up with “Mother Goose”; and the two writers filled in the other names together. Epps said they had expected the names to be temporary character placeholders, but they remained in the film. Epps described the process in a 2019 interview.
That account establishes some creator intent, but it does not provide an origin anecdote for every name. A familiar word may suggest a fitting trait or image without proving that it was the writers’ reason for choosing it.
What the documented explanations say
| Callsign | What is documented | What the name may suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Maverick | Epps said he came up with the name and that it represented the character’s personality. | “Maverick” commonly describes an independent-minded person. Epps did not identify a specific incident or more precise naming rationale. |
| Iceman | Epps said he came up with the name and that it represented the character’s personality. | The word can suggest coolness or composure. The interview does not give a more detailed origin story. |
| Goose | Epps said Cash came up with “Mother Goose”; the screenplay’s character list uses “Goose.” | The creator’s remark links the name to “Mother Goose,” but does not explain the character’s individual naming story. |
| Viper | Epps said the character was named after Pete Pettigrew, the film’s technical advisor. | This is a reference to a real person, not evidence that the fictional character is a direct biography of Pettigrew. |
The character-name list in the film’s screenplay identifies the fictional characters and their names. It is useful for confirming the roster, but it does not explain why most names were chosen.

Why is Viper connected to Pete Pettigrew?
Epps described Pettigrew as an important technical advisor who shared stories and information about the Navy and the Top Gun school. He said Pettigrew had a cameo as the “old guy” at the Officers’ Club and called him “the real Viper.” Epps’s account makes Viper the clearest documented real-person reference among the callsigns; it does not make the film’s Mike Metcalf a portrayal of Pettigrew’s life. The same 2019 interview contains Epps’s explanation of Pettigrew’s role.
The original film’s callsign roster
The screenplay character list gives the following names. For the entries without a documented individual explanation in Epps’s interview, the ordinary-language association below is only an interpretation—not a confirmed account of the writers’ intent. The list includes instructors as well as pilots.

| Name in the film | Character | What can responsibly be said |
|---|---|---|
| Maverick | Pete Mitchell | Epps said he chose the name to represent the character’s personality; no more specific origin is given. |
| Goose | Nick Bradshaw | Epps attributed “Mother Goose” to Cash. The screenplay lists the character as Goose. |
| Cougar | Bill Cortell | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented in the interview. “Cougar” may evoke the animal, but that is interpretation. |
| Merlin | Sam Wills | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. The word can evoke the legendary magician or the bird, but neither association is confirmed as the writers’ intent. |
| Stinger | Tom Otowaczeck | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. “Stinger” can suggest a sharp sting or strike, an interpretation only. |
| Viper | Mike Metcalf | Epps said the name referred to technical advisor Pete Pettigrew, whom he called the real Viper. |
| Jester | Dick Hetherly | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. “Jester” suggests a comic or playful figure, but that is not a confirmed naming explanation. |
| Hollywood | Rick Neven | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. The word evokes the film industry, but the interview does not explain the choice. |
| Wolfman | Henry Ruth | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. Any association with a wolf or werewolf is interpretation. |
| Slider | Ron Kerner | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. “Slider” can suggest sliding or gliding, but the intended reference is not established. |
| Iceman | Tom Kazansky | Epps said he chose the name to represent the character’s personality; no more specific origin is given. |
| Sundown | Evan Gough | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. The word refers to sunset, but that meaning does not establish the reason for the callsign. |
| Tombstone | Sig Priestly | The screenplay lists the name; no individual origin is documented. The word’s associations are not evidence of the writers’ intent. |
| Redneck | Emmett Johnson | The screenplay list includes the name; no individual origin is documented in the interview. |
The screenplay also lists Charlie—Charlotte Blackwood—but identifies her as a civilian. She is not a Navy aviator with a callsign in this roster.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Were the callsigns based on real pilots?
The available creator testimony supports a specific real-person reference for Viper: Epps said the name honored Pete Pettigrew, the film’s technical advisor. The testimony does not establish that the other callsigns were taken from real pilots. Their appearance in a screenplay roster, or a word’s apparent fit with a character, is not enough to confirm a real-life source.
