A separate Jordan collection brought $8,032,800, but it consisted of six single shoes—not six pairs. The available sale records do not support a reliable top-ten ranking of individual basketball-shoe sales, so the most accurate answer is a focused look at the verified records and what they actually represent.
Why there is no reliable top ten of individual pairs
A ranked list needs comparable, verified sale results: individual shoes must be distinguished from pairs and collections, and the treatment of buyer’s premiums must be clear. The available sources document several major Jordan sales, but do not establish ten individual basketball-shoe sales on a consistent basis. Calling these records a definitive top ten would imply evidence that is not available.
The figures below are therefore a selection of documented results, not a ranking. They distinguish an individual pair from a collection and avoid treating estimates or non-basketball footwear as completed basketball-shoe sales.

| 11 April 2023, Sotheby’s | Michael Jordan’s game-worn Air Jordan XIII from the 1998 NBA Finals | $2,200,000 | Guinness World Records identifies this as the most expensive worn sneaker pair sold at auction on its record page, accessed 8 October 2026. Guinness notes that records can change and may not be published immediately. Guinness World Records |
| 2 February 2024, Sotheby’s | The Dynasty Collection: six single-foot shoes worn by Jordan in championship-clinching games | $8,032,800 | Guinness records this as the most expensive game-worn sneaker collection sold at auction. It is a collection result, not the price of one pair. Guinness World Records |
| 17 May 2020, Sotheby’s | Jordan’s signed, game-worn 1985 Air Jordan 1 pair | $560,000 | Sotheby’s reported the realized sale price and said it exceeded the pair’s $150,000 high estimate by more than 3.5 times. Sotheby’s |
Why the $8 million result is not the price of a pair
The 2024 Dynasty Collection comprised six single-foot shoes—one representing each of Jordan’s championship-clinching games in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998. Guinness lists its $8,032,800 result as a collection record. Comparing that total directly with the price of one pair would mix different lot sizes and create a misleading leaderboard.

The Associated Press reported that Jordan gave the shoes to Tim Hallam, a longtime Chicago Bulls public-relations executive, and that they later passed to a private collector before the auction. That provenance connects the shoes to Jordan and the championship games they represent. Associated Press
What makes the 1985 Air Jordan 1 pair distinctive
The $560,000 pair was not simply a later retail Air Jordan 1. Sotheby’s described it as a signed, game-worn pair from 1985 and noted its unusual materials, player-exclusive mid-cut shape, red laces, and mismatched sizes. Those details help explain why the original pair belongs in a conversation about sports memorabilia rather than being treated as interchangeable with a retail retro release.

Which apparent records do not belong in this comparison?
The Nike Moon Shoe
Sotheby’s said the $560,000 Jordan sale surpassed the prior sneaker-pair record of $437,500, set by the Nike Moon Shoe in 2019. The Moon Shoe was a racing shoe, not a basketball shoe, so that earlier sneaker result should not be inserted into a basketball-footwear ranking.

Catalog estimates without a realized sale price
Christie’s catalog material describes and estimates several Jordan shoes, but an estimate is not a completed auction result. Without a reported final price, those entries cannot be ranked alongside realized sales. Christie’s catalog feature
Retail retro shoes
A retail Air Jordan 1 Retro High may resemble the original design, but it is not Jordan’s signed, game-worn, player-exclusive 1985 pair. The auction result belongs to that specific collectible and its provenance, not to the retail product family.

How to judge claims about the most expensive basketball shoes
Before comparing a headline price with another sale, check what the auction lot actually contained and how its price was reported:
- Lot size: Was it one shoe, a pair, or a multi-shoe collection?
- Sale status: Is the figure a realized price, an estimate, or an asking price?
- Price convention: Does the source specify whether the reported figure includes the buyer’s premium? Do not assume the conventions are identical across sales.
- Basketball relevance: Confirm the footwear is a basketball shoe, rather than another kind of sneaker such as a racing shoe.
- Provenance and identity: Look for evidence tying the shoes to a player, game, season, signature, or documented chain of custody.
- Type and condition: Distinguish game-worn or player-exclusive originals from unworn samples and retail releases.
These distinctions matter because a record for a collection, a record for a pair, and a retail shoe’s price answer different questions.
