Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench reunited on the road for Life Is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour ’24, a multi-city tribute to The Band and Robbie Robertson. The tour ran from October 19 to November 16, 2024; it is over, and it was not a Heartbreakers reunion tour.
What was the tour?
Announced by Blackbird Presents on August 14, 2024, Life Is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour ’24 took inspiration from The Band’s farewell concert, The Last Waltz. The 1976 concert became a landmark event in the group’s history. The promoter’s announcement also recalled its closing number, “Don’t Do It,” The Band’s version of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It.” Blackbird Presents’ announcement described Robbie Robertson as The Band’s lead guitarist, songwriter and a founding member.

How Campbell and Tench fit in
Campbell and Tench, longtime bandmates in Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, were both featured in the touring ensemble. Their appearance together was a road reunion within an all-star tribute—not a re-formation of the Heartbreakers.
Who performed?
The main lineup included:
- Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench
- Ryan Bingham and Jamey Johnson
- Don Was and John Medeski
- Dave Malone, Terence Higgins and Cyril Neville
- Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns
Lukas Nelson joined for three Colorado shows in place of Jamey Johnson, according to Rolling Stone Canada’s tour report.

How the 2026 Heartbreakers performance differed
A separate event was reported at the Americana Awards in September 2026. BroadwayWorld reported that Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair performed together, with Chris Stapleton and later Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston also involved. The report characterized the original lineup’s appearance as its first performance together in almost 25 years; that timing is the report’s description, not a claim independently verified here. It was a special awards performance, not a continuation of the 2024 Last Waltz tour or evidence of a current tour. BroadwayWorld’s report covers that separate appearance.

The tour’s historical reference point is The Last Waltz, which exists as a concert film and soundtrack. The event announcement and tour coverage establish that connection, but do not establish the availability or edition of a particular release.
