There is no objective ranking of the worst Saturday Night Live cast members. One published countdown, from WatchMojo, names Jim Belushi, Tony Rosato, Gilbert Gottfried, Rob Riggle, Jay Mohr, Colin Quinn, Randy Quaid, Jim Breuer, Victoria Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. The order below follows WatchMojo’s list, not a measurable consensus; the reasons are editorial judgments about performers’ work on the show, not verdicts on their talent or careers.
How to judge a “worst” SNL cast member
A fair comparison has to separate different jobs on the show. A performer might be an effective ensemble player without creating a signature character, or memorable in sketches while being a poor fit for Weekend Update. SNL Rankings evaluates cast members across sketch work, character performances, impressions and Weekend Update anchoring or writing; its database also includes people who appeared for only a handful of episodes. Those dimensions help explain a ranking, but neither a low assessment nor a short tenure proves that someone was among the worst.
- Sketch contribution: Consider scene work, comic performance, collaboration and writing contributions.
- Distinctive characters: Ask whether the performer created roles that endured with audiences, for better or worse.
- Impressions and topical work: These matter when they were a significant part of the performer’s role.
- Weekend Update: Judge anchoring or writing only for cast members who did that work.
- Opportunity and tenure: Brief runs and limited screen time provide less evidence than sustained work.
- SNL-specific fit: A disappointing stint on the show does not settle a performer’s ability or success elsewhere.
With those limits in mind, here is WatchMojo’s countdown, with its stated reasoning treated as opinion. WatchMojo’s full list provides the original ordering and explanations.
WatchMojo’s 10-name countdown
10. Jim Belushi
WatchMojo’s criticism is that Belushi did not leave behind standout characters or a lasting impact on the show. That is a claim about his SNL legacy, not a complete assessment of his comedy career.

The list points to Rosato’s limited lead status. That is a narrower criticism than saying he could not perform: how much a cast member is asked to carry can shape how memorable a short run appears.
8. Gilbert Gottfried
WatchMojo argues that Gottfried’s early SNL performance was a difficult match for the season’s material. The judgment is about fit between performer and show, not an objective measure of his broader comedic ability.

7. Rob Riggle
The countdown cites a limited role and impressions. The rationale turns on what the show gave Riggle to do and how much his work stood out in that context.
6. Jay Mohr
WatchMojo says Mohr lacked standout characters and lasting impact on SNL. A list using different criteria could weigh sketch support or other contributions differently.

The list takes a negative view of Quinn’s Weekend Update delivery. Since this criticism concerns a particular role, it should not be generalized into a judgment about every kind of performance.
4. Randy Quaid
WatchMojo’s reason is a lack of memorable recurring work. Recurring characters are one measure of an SNL run, but not the only one.
Rank #4
3. Jim Breuer
The countdown describes Goat Boy as divisive and criticizes Breuer’s loud stoner-comedy style. Both are aesthetic judgments: what one viewer finds irritating, another may find distinctive.
2. Victoria Jackson
WatchMojo faults Jackson’s characters as repetitive. That criticism focuses on the range of roles associated with her run rather than establishing a consensus about her overall value to the cast.

1. Robert Downey Jr.
WatchMojo places Downey first, citing an unfavorable assessment of his brief SNL stint. A short tenure makes any sweeping conclusion especially uncertain: limited time on the show is not, by itself, proof of limited ability.

There is no canonical set of ten. A 2007 CinemaBlend essay made different selections, including Horatio Sanz and Janeane Garofalo. Its author said they avoided most performers from the early-to-mid-1980s, a period they considered relatively poor, and preferred memorable cast members over obscure ones. That approach produces a different kind of list from a ranking built around screen impact or particular performance categories. CinemaBlend’s 2007 essay is another writer’s subjective argument, not confirmation of a shared ranking.
Awards history does not settle the question either. The Television Academy’s SNL awards and nominations record offers show-level context, but it is not a standardized measure of which cast members performed worst.
Why an SNL run can be uneven
Even a single performer’s record on the show can contain strong and weak material. Seth Meyers put that unevenness succinctly: “I’ve always said the worst show has something great and the best show has something terrible,” in an Associated Press feature on SNL’s legacy. The point applies at the level of individual sketches as well as episodes: a ranking can identify a critic’s least successful cast members without proving that every contribution they made failed. The Associated Press feature includes Meyers’s reflection.
