By FilmDB’s reported worldwide theatrical grosses, The Dark Knight Rises is Morgan Freeman’s highest-grossing eligible film, followed by The Dark Knight. The ranking below uses FilmDB’s figures as accessed on October 8, 2026, and counts eligible credited acting and voice performances. These are reported box-office grosses—not profit—and database totals can change.
The 10 highest-grossing Morgan Freeman movies
FilmDB’s credited box-office filmography labels its data as eligible acting credits with reported worldwide theatrical gross and identifies voice roles separately. The table follows that single database for both eligibility and ranking; figures are rounded as FilmDB reports them. A worldwide gross combines reported domestic and international theatrical box office, rather than measuring a movie’s earnings after costs.
| Rank | Film | Year | Freeman’s performance | FilmDB-reported worldwide gross |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Dark Knight Rises | 2012 | On-screen acting | $1.08 billion |
| 2 | The Dark Knight | 2008 | On-screen acting | $1.00 billion |
| 3 | Bruce Almighty | 2003 | On-screen acting | $484.6 million |
| 4 | The Lego Movie | 2014 | Voice performance | $470.8 million |
| 5 | Lucy | 2014 | On-screen acting | $469.1 million |
| 6 | Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves | 1991 | On-screen acting | $390.5 million |
| 7 | Now You See Me | 2013 | On-screen acting | $351.7 million |
| 8 | Deep Impact | 1998 | On-screen acting | $349.5 million |
| 9 | Wanted | 2008 | On-screen acting | $342.5 million |
| 10 | Now You See Me 2 | 2016 | On-screen acting | $334.9 million |
The Numbers’ Dark Knight Trilogy page reports more precise worldwide totals for the top two: $1,082,228,107 for The Dark Knight Rises and $1,010,082,145 for The Dark Knight. Those figures corroborate their order, but differ from FilmDB’s rounded amounts. The list above retains FilmDB values throughout rather than mixing databases.
Why worldwide gross—and this credit rule—matter
This is a ranking by reported nominal worldwide theatrical gross, not domestic box office, ticket sales, inflation-adjusted earnings, budget, or profit. The Numbers’ page for The Dark Knight Rises illustrates the distinction: it reports $448,139,099 domestic and $634,089,008 international, which together make its $1,082,228,107 worldwide total. A domestic-only comparison would therefore use a different measure.

Freeman’s voice role in The Lego Movie qualifies because FilmDB’s eligible credits include voice performances as well as on-screen acting. The table marks the role type so readers can see why an animated film appears alongside live-action titles.

FilmDB’s actor page reports usable worldwide financial data for 62 films among 203 tracked acting credits. That is a count of films with data in that database, not a complete count of every movie Freeman has appeared in; this top ten is consequently a ranking within FilmDB’s reported and eligible records.
Other box-office charts can use different scopes. Box Office Watch’s chart, accessed October 8, 2026, covers 43 films dated 1989–2021 and reports $6.93 billion in lifetime worldwide grosses, but omits the two Dark Knight films. The Numbers lists Freeman as Lucius Fox in both. For the requested all-credit ranking, FilmDB supplies the consistent list here; the alternative chart should not be treated as interchangeable with it.
Totals also vary by database and can be revised, including when rereleases are incorporated. For example, FilmDB rounds The Dark Knight to $1.00 billion, while The Numbers reports $1,010,082,145. These figures describe reported theatrical gross only. Gross revenue alone does not establish a film’s net profit, since it does not account for production, distribution, or other costs.
