It was a state proposal, not a confirmed royal itinerary: Premier Roger Cook said the King’s team would decide the schedule and timing.
What Western Australia proposed
In June 2024, Premier Roger Cook promoted Perth as a possible first stop, describing it as Australia’s “Western gateway.” The state suggested three distinctly Western Australian experiences: the WA Museum Boola Bardip, Rottnest Island and the Matagarup Bridge precinct. PerthNow reported the proposal on 23 June 2024, reproducing remarks supplied by Cook.
Cook said: “On behalf of the State, the Cook Government has promoted several uniquely Western Australian experiences to the Commonwealth that would leave the King and Queen with memories they won’t be able to get anywhere else in the nation or indeed the world.” The suggested destinations were invitations to consider, not evidence that the royal couple had agreed to visit them.
Who controlled the itinerary?
Cook had officially invited the King and Queen to Western Australia, confirming the invitation in Parliament on 21 March 2024. The parliamentary record also makes clear that the state could not set the royal schedule. In May, Cook said: “Ultimately, though, we just have to be ready to move, because, as Mr Gretton said, it is essentially up to his team in terms of the itinerary and the timing and how much notice we get.”

That distinction matters: Western Australia was advocating for a visit and offering possible activities, while the King’s team controlled whether Perth featured and when any engagement would take place.
What the October 2024 visit record shows
The King and Queen visited Australia in October 2024. The Western Australian Government House annual report documents their 21 October visit to Canberra and does not record a Western Australia stop. That report establishes what it documents; it does not explain why WA was not included or establish every detail of the tour’s itinerary.

Rottnest Island’s visitor context
Rottnest was a substantial visitor destination independent of the royal proposal. The Western Australian Government reported that more than 823,000 people travelled to the island by ferry in the 2023–24 financial year, nearly 13 per cent more than in the previous financial year. The government published those figures in October 2024 in a statement about worker accommodation. They describe ferry visitation, not any royal travel plans.
