In Jonathan Franzen’s Crossroads, the question is not simply whether God abandons the faithful. Sayari Debnath’s reading of the novel asks how religious belief shapes a person’s capacity for love—and whether devotion, fear, obligation, or self-interest is really guiding the choices people make.
What Crossroads is about
Crossroads is a 2021 novel by Jonathan Franzen. Its story begins on December 23, 1971, in the Chicago suburbs, where associate pastor Russ Hildebrandt is contemplating leaving a joyless marriage. His wife, Marion, has a history she keeps hidden, while their children—Clem, Becky, Perry, and Judson—make choices that unsettle the family’s life. Franzen’s official author page outlines the family and setting; the publisher’s description frames the novel as an interwoven family story at a moral crisis.

Debnath’s Scroll.in article reads the Hildebrandts’ conflicts through the collision of Christian belief with marriage, sexuality, money, war, race, addiction, and family obligations. The characters are not arranged into a simple division between the faithful and the faithless. Their motives overlap: love and duty can sit alongside fear, desire, or the pursuit of personal freedom.
What does God have to do with a person’s capacity for love?
That is the central question in Debnath’s interpretation. As the article puts it: “What does god have to do with a person’s capacity for love? Everything, suggests Jonathan Franzen in his 2021 novel Crossroads.” The claim belongs to the article’s reading of the novel, not to a settled theological verdict that God abandons believers.

The question makes faith matter in practical terms. Belief may shape what a character thinks love demands, what obligations should be honored, and what consequences to fear. But professed devotion does not automatically settle whether an action is loving or morally sound. The tension between stated belief and behavior is part of what gives the family’s decisions their moral weight.
Faith, freedom, and competing motives
The Hildebrandts face pressures that make no single motive sufficient to explain their choices. Russ’s marital dissatisfaction, Marion’s concealed past, and the children’s diverging pursuits place personal desire alongside family responsibility. The resulting conflicts ask how far a person can pursue freedom without disregarding others—and whether an act motivated by religious duty is necessarily generous, or may also answer fear of judgment.
Rank #2
That ambiguity is why the headline’s phrase “the maker abandons the faithful” is best understood as a provocation rather than a plot summary. The novel’s family crisis opens questions about faith and moral conduct; Debnath’s article explores those questions without reducing the book to a proof that God has rejected its believers.

At the time of its publication, Crossroads was described as the first novel in Franzen’s projected trilogy, A Key to All Mythologies. That identifies the book’s place in the plan announced then; it does not establish the current publication status of the trilogy’s other volumes.
