The term means “wives and girlfriends,” and any list calling 20 people the best would be an editorial selection, not an official league ranking. Recent reporting supports a handful of dated examples—not a verified directory of 20 current partners—so this guide explains the label and identifies those examples without filling gaps with speculation.
What does “WAG” mean?
“WAG” is shorthand for “wives and girlfriends.” The term became widely prominent in football coverage around England’s 2006 World Cup campaign, when players’ partners became a media story in their own right. A 2018 Sporting News article reflects that period’s celebrity-focused framing, naming figures such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Coleen Rooney, Abbey Clancy and Perrie Edwards. Those names are historical examples, not evidence of current Premier League relationships.
The label can also flatten people into their connection to a footballer. A University of Manchester thesis on partners of elite male footballers in England records interviewees discussing work, businesses, caregiving and degrees, as well as the limits of the WAG stereotype. These are qualitative accounts, not a measure of how common any experience is. One participant, Allison, said: “The one thing I wish people knew about wives and girlfriends is they are the most badass women I’ve ever met…They are more than what anybody ever thinks they are. They’re strong. I just wish people could see that- and probably don’t ever underestimate one.”
Four recent examples reported in England coverage
The Guardian’s June 15, 2026 report about England players at the World Cup identifies these partners and describes aspects of their public lives. They are examples from England-team coverage, not a ranking or a complete list of partners across the Premier League.

Why this is not a defensible top-20 ranking
“Top” has no objective meaning here unless the criteria are stated. Fame, media coverage, career achievements and public projects are different measures, and none establishes who is “best.” The available reporting does not verify 20 current Premier League partners or provide a consistent comparison across clubs. Turning those gaps into a numbered list would imply certainty the evidence does not support.

The Premier League’s August 6, 2026 summer feature provides season context ahead of 2026/27, but it does not rank or enumerate players’ partners. It reports that 182 Premier League players were selected to represent their countries at the 2026 FIFA World Cup; that number concerns players, not WAGs. The Guardian’s 2026 article likewise concerns the England squad, not every Premier League club.

A useful feature can select people transparently rather than claim an authoritative ranking. For each entry, an editor should check the public relationship and Premier League connection as of a named date, then apply the same criteria throughout:

Only publicly documented information belongs in such a list. A person’s private life should not be inferred from social-media visibility, and a partner’s fame should not be presented as proof of achievement. With the available dated reporting, the four examples above are supportable; a full top 20 is not.
