The “big surprise” in the Spider-Man rumor about Avengers: Secret Wars is Andrew Garfield: a leaker claimed in October 2024 that he would have a “big role” in the film. That is an unconfirmed claim, not an announcement from Marvel, Disney, or Sony.
What did the Spider-Man leak claim?
On October 10, 2024, leaker MyTimeToShineHello posted: “I hear Andrew Garfield will have a big role in Avengers Secret Wars / And Sony wants him back for more projects.” BGR reported the post on October 16, 2024, framing it as a rumor rather than confirmed casting. BGR’s report does not establish what “big role” would mean, or provide an official confirmation of Garfield’s involvement.
Is Andrew Garfield confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars?
No confirmation appears in the cited reporting. The claim about a role in Secret Wars and Sony’s alleged interest in further projects should be treated as the leaker’s words, not as verified casting news. Until Marvel, Disney, or Sony announces his involvement, whether Garfield will return remains unknown.
What is officially known about the film?
Disney’s D23 announcement described Avengers: Secret Wars as a film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and listed May 7, 2027, as its planned theatrical release date. That is the date in the D23 announcement; release schedules can change, so it should not be read as an assurance that the date remains current.

Marvel has published earlier schedule updates, but its 2023 update is historical context, not a current confirmation of the release date. A separate Marvel announcement about a November 2026 Avengers comic is likewise about a comics title, not evidence of Garfield’s film casting.
Why the rumor is easy to confuse with confirmation
The post combines two claims—Garfield would have a substantial part in the film, and Sony wants him for more projects—but neither is presented as a studio announcement. The phrase “big role” is not explained, and the reporting does not specify a plot, screen time, or how Garfield’s Peter Parker would fit into the movie. Those details remain speculation.

Marvel’s films draw on comic-book material, but that broader practice cannot verify a particular casting rumor. In a September 9, 2026 report, GamesRadar quoted Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige saying: “We pick and choose from Marvel’s rich, nearly 90-year comics history and make movies that honor the source but become something entirely different,” he continued. The comment concerns adaptation in general, not Garfield or Secret Wars casting.
