How reliable is this ranking?
It is best read as a countdown from one 2018 feature, not a census of every costly rap video. Other published lists differ in length and scope: Beats, Rhymes and Lists published an eleven-entry ranking in 2023, including Wu-Tang Clan’s “Triumph” at $800,000, while CADA’s 2022 list covers fewer videos. The five entries that recur in the reviewed lists—“Victory,” “2 Legit 2 Quit,” “What’s It Gonna Be,” “Miami” and “Stronger”—have matching rounded estimates. Agreement between lists is useful context, but it does not turn those estimates into audited figures. Beats, Rhymes and Lists; CADA.
Jay-Z and UGK’s “Big Pimpin’” is a boundary example: Stingray reports a $1 million budget, but that single report does not establish where it would rank or whether it meets the same eligibility rules as the 2018 list. Stingray.
None of the reviewed rankings supplies primary budget documents or a shared method for defining and comparing video costs. The amounts should therefore be treated as publication-reported estimates. Their production descriptions suggest likely cost drivers—sets, locations, casts, vehicles, stunts, costumes, effects and editing—but do not establish how much any one element contributed.
