Robin Roberts was in Rwanda with her wife, Amber Laign, in July 2025, rather than at Good Morning America. Roberts said they were guests of Giants of Africa and Inmuwetrust for an event celebrating young basketball players. The trip also marked 20 years as a couple.
Why was Robin Roberts absent from GMA?
Roberts’s Rwanda trip coincided with a temporary absence from Good Morning America. In its July 30, 2025 report, The Independent reported that she was expected to return the following week. That was the expectation reported at the time, not a current schedule update.
What was the “Incredible Journey”?
Roberts and Laign traveled to Rwanda as guests of Giants of Africa and Inmuwetrust. Roberts described the occasion as a celebration of young basketball players across Africa. Laign’s caption framed their anniversary as “20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey,” and described dancing and community service as part of the experience. These remarks were reported by The Independent from the couple’s social posts.
The Giants of Africa festival
The Independent reported that the 2025 Giants of Africa festival brought together more than 300 men and women from 20 African nations for a week. Its program included basketball, culture, education, and entertainment. That participant figure describes the festival; it is not a count of people Roberts and Laign personally met.

What did the anniversary mark?
The Rwanda visit marked 20 years of Roberts and Laign’s relationship, not 20 years of marriage. They married in September 2023, after an 18-year relationship, according to Good Morning America’s account of their wedding.
Was this Roberts’s later trip to South Africa?
No. The “Incredible Journey” refers to the 2025 anniversary trip to Rwanda. A separate 2026 absence was tied to Roberts traveling to South Africa to film Lifetime’s Angel in the Rubble, with Laign accompanying her, as Good Housekeeping reported in June 2026. The two trips had different destinations and purposes.
