Entertainment outlets reported in January 2025 that Robert Eggers had a deal to write and direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 Labyrinth. That reporting named TriStar Pictures and members of the creative team, but it did not establish a release date, cast, plot, or current production status. No current studio announcement confirming the project’s status is established by the sources cited here.
What was reported about the Labyrinth sequel?
On January 23, 2025, The Guardian reported that Eggers was set to write and direct a sequel, citing Deadline for the deal report. TheWrap separately reported that Eggers had closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to direct the film. These are reports about a deal, not a current production update from TriStar or Sony.
The Guardian named Chris and Eleanor Columbus and Lisa Henson as producers. TheWrap reported that the Columbus team and Sjón were part of the writer-producer team. The reports did not disclose the story; TheWrap described the plot as under wraps, and The Guardian said project details were unknown.
Is it officially happening, and when could it come out?
The strongest supported answer is that two outlets reported Eggers’s attachment and a TriStar deal in January 2025. The sources cited here do not confirm whether the film has moved into production or provide a release date. It would be inaccurate to present the sequel as having a newly confirmed schedule or production status.

Who is in the cast, and what is the story?
No cast was confirmed in the cited reports. They do not establish that Jennifer Connelly will return, and they give no indication that David Bowie will appear. Bowie starred in the original film; he died in 2016. The reports also did not reveal the sequel’s plot, characters, or how it would connect to the original.
How the sequel relates to the 1986 film
Sony describes Labyrinth as a 1986 family fantasy and science-fiction film starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Its story follows Sarah, who enters a maze to rescue her infant stepbrother Toby from a kingdom ruled by the Goblin King. Sony lists the original in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats on its official film page.
For viewers who want to revisit the film, Sony’s Labyrinth page links to retailers, including Amazon, for the original’s home-video editions. The 4K Ultra HD edition is a release of the 1986 film, not the reported sequel.

The theatrical rerelease has already taken place
The Jim Henson Company and Fathom Entertainment announced a 40th-anniversary theatrical rerelease remastered in 4K for January 8–11, 2026. Those screenings were a past event, not an upcoming release. Fathom’s announcement concerns the original film and does not provide a sequel update.
The 2026 product collection is anniversary merchandise
In a February 11, 2026 announcement, The Jim Henson Company described a 40th-anniversary product collection that included categories such as puzzles, collectible figures, apparel, an adult coloring book, a YA novelization, sauces and spices, an advent calendar, and plush. The announcement identifies licensees and product categories, but does not establish current stock or retailer availability. These products celebrate the Labyrinth franchise; the announcement does not say they are connected to Eggers’s reported sequel.
Melissa Segal, Head of Global Consumer Products for The Jim Henson Company, said: “The Labyrinth franchise has continued to grow year over year for forty years, and it will continue to flourish.” The company’s release dates the collection announcement to February 11, 2026, the film’s 40th-anniversary year; that anniversary statement is not a market-performance statistic.
