Reports mix base pay with backend bonuses and other incentives, so the figures below are best read as attributed estimates, not a consistent ledger of what he ultimately received for every appearance.
Reported pay by MCU film
The table includes the films for which the reviewed sources provide a figure. “Reported amount” does not mean base salary in every case: the sources sometimes describe a combined payday or an estimate that includes backend compensation.
| Film | Reported amount | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man (2008) | $500,000 | Celebrity Net Worth lists this as an estimate; it is not a studio-confirmed figure. (Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Iron Man 2 (2010) | $10 million | The Guardian reported that a six-film deal raised Downey’s basic salary to $10 million per film while retaining incentives. Celebrity Net Worth also lists $10 million. This describes basic salary, not necessarily total compensation. (The Guardian; Celebrity Net Worth) |
| The Avengers (2012) | $50 million | The Guardian reported the estimate in 2019. Celebrity Net Worth breaks its figure into $10 million in base salary and a $40 million backend bonus. (The Guardian; Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Iron Man 3 (2013) | $75 million | Celebrity Net Worth’s secondary compilation; not a confirmed studio disclosure. (Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth’s secondary estimate. (Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Captain America: Civil War (2016) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth’s secondary estimate. The Guardian says this film had a separate arrangement from the six-film deal. (Celebrity Net Worth; The Guardian) |
| Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) | $15 million | The Independent reported an estimate of $5 million per day for three days of work; Celebrity Net Worth lists $15 million. Treat both as reported estimates, not official compensation. (The Independent; Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Avengers: Infinity War (2018) | At least $75 million, in one estimate | The Guardian reported The Hollywood Reporter’s estimate of at least $75 million, but also noted a disputed estimate of about $20 million. Celebrity Net Worth lists $75 million. The difference underscores that reported pay can depend on what backend participation is counted. (The Guardian; Celebrity Net Worth) |
| Avengers: Endgame (2019) | $75 million expected or estimated | The Guardian described $75 million as an expected amount in 2019, not a confirmed final payment; it also noted a disputed estimate around $20 million. Celebrity Net Worth lists $75 million. (The Guardian; Celebrity Net Worth) |
Why reported figures do not line up
Base salary is not the same as total compensation
The Guardian described a reported contract that combined a basic salary with substantial backend profit participation, commonly estimated at around 2.5% of a film’s profits. It reported that the six-film deal made before Iron Man 2 raised Downey’s basic salary to $10 million per film while retaining incentives. A base figure therefore cannot be compared directly with a payday estimate that includes backend compensation.
Different films had different arrangements
The Guardian noted separate arrangements for Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Homecoming’s reported $5 million per day for three days is a specific estimate tied to a short stint of work; it should not be treated as a standard rate for every MCU appearance.

Some estimates are explicitly disputed
For Infinity War and Endgame, reporting included both estimates around $20 million and figures around $75 million. Those numbers may reflect different assumptions about backend earnings and what counts as compensation. The available reporting does not establish one definitive final amount for either film.

What the figures can—and cannot—tell you
- The reported Iron Man figure is $500,000, but it comes from a secondary compilation rather than a public studio confirmation.
- Later amounts often combine or are affected by incentives and backend participation, so the table is not a like-for-like comparison of base salaries.
- The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable per-film amount for The Incredible Hulk (2008). The table is therefore not a complete accounting of every MCU appearance.
- A cumulative total is especially uncertain. Celebrity Net Worth’s page gives $345.5 million in one key fact and lists film entries that add up to $380.5 million, an internal mismatch that makes either sum unsuitable as a definitive total.
