Robert Downey Jr. later recalled that he backed himself for the Scarecrow role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and met the director over tea to discuss it. His account describes a pitch and a meeting—not a confirmed audition, formal offer or finalist position. Cillian Murphy ultimately played Jonathan Crane, also known as Scarecrow.
What did Robert Downey Jr. say about the Scarecrow role?
Downey recalled hearing about the part and responding, “I’m Scarecrow.” He said he then met Nolan for tea to talk about the character. In Downey’s telling, Nolan was polite but did not seem fully engaged in the conversation, leaving Downey with the impression that the meeting was not going anywhere. The Hollywood Reporter’s account quotes Downey’s recollection; the wording is reported from entertainment coverage, not verified against a primary recording or transcript.

Did Downey audition or come close to being cast?
The available coverage establishes that Downey pitched himself and met Nolan, but it does not establish that he completed a formal audition, received an offer or became a finalist. Those distinctions matter: a meeting to discuss a role is not the same thing as documented casting progress.
Who played Scarecrow in Batman Begins?
Cillian Murphy played Dr. Jonathan Crane, the Gotham psychiatrist who becomes Scarecrow, in Nolan’s Batman Begins (2005). Retrospective reporting says Murphy had initially auditioned for Batman, rather than Scarecrow. His path to the finished film was therefore distinct from Downey’s reported self-pitch and meeting. IndieWire’s retrospective coverage discusses Murphy’s initial Batman audition.

When did Downey tell the story?
Contemporaneous coverage placed Downey’s recollection at a question-and-answer session after an Oppenheimer screening at Los Angeles’s Aero Theatre. The exact event date and a primary recording or transcript are not established by that coverage. Variety’s report identifies the screening Q&A as the setting for the anecdote.

Nolan later said he was initially a little afraid of Downey when they first met during the Batman Begins casting process. That comment adds context to their early interaction, but it does not explain why Downey was not cast as Scarecrow. No reason for Nolan’s casting decision is established here. GQ’s coverage reports Nolan’s remark.
