Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two murder counts in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. Prosecutors allege special circumstances of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, along with personal use of a knife. The Los Angeles County District Attorney said on September 15, 2026, that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty; if convicted as charged, Reiner could face life in prison without parole. The charges are allegations, and Reiner is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

What charges does Nick Reiner face?

The grand-jury indictment charges Reiner with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. It also alleges special circumstances of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, and alleges that Reiner personally used a knife. These are allegations in the indictment, not findings that the events occurred as prosecutors allege. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s August 12 announcement describes the charges and indictment.

How did the case reach an indictment?

Initial charges

The District Attorney’s Office said Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were fatally stabbed at their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, and that Nick Reiner was arrested later that evening. On December 16, prosecutors announced two murder counts, a multiple-murder special-circumstance allegation and an allegation that Reiner personally used a knife. Those statements describe the prosecution’s accusations. The initial charging announcement sets out the office’s account.

Grand-jury indictment

A grand jury returned the indictment on July 20, 2026; it was unsealed on August 12. Reiner pleaded not guilty that day, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The indictment added the lying-in-wait special-circumstance allegation. The Associated Press reported that an indictment allows prosecutors to proceed without California’s preliminary-hearing process, where evidence would otherwise be aired publicly. The indictment is an accusation, not a verdict. The AP’s August 12 report explains the procedural change and notes that prosecutors had not disclosed a possible motive.

Did Nick Reiner plead guilty?

No. The District Attorney’s August 12 announcement and its September 15 update both report that Reiner pleaded not guilty. A not-guilty plea is not a finding about what happened; the case remains a prosecution of allegations.

Will prosecutors seek the death penalty?

No. On September 15, 2026, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced that his office would not seek capital punishment. He said the decision followed a review of the case. If Reiner is convicted as charged, the District Attorney’s Office says the maximum sentence would be life in state prison without the possibility of parole. The office’s September 15 statement gives the decision and potential sentence.
