What Jake and Romy Reiner said
In a joint statement shared on December 17, 2025, Rob and Michele Reiner’s children described the depth of their grief and thanked people who had offered support. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said, according to TheWrap’s account of the statement.
They also wrote: “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
The siblings asked the public to respect their privacy and to avoid treating speculation as fact: “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

How the statement differed from the family’s first announcement
The children’s message followed an earlier statement from a family spokesperson announcing the deaths. The spokesperson said, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” and added, “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” as reproduced by TheWrap.
The two statements came from different speakers and at different points: the spokesperson’s announcement conveyed the news and made an initial request for privacy; Jake and Romy later spoke about their grief, their parents’ importance to them and the need for compassion.

Latest official update in the Nick Reiner case
In an August 12, 2026 announcement, the County of Los Angeles said a grand jury indictment returned on July 20 had been unsealed and that Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to two murder counts with special-circumstance allegations. The county said the case remained under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division and that a decision on whether to seek the death penalty would come later.
These are allegations, not findings of guilt. The county states that Nick Reiner is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. This account reflects the official update dated August 12, 2026; it does not establish a later court outcome.

A brief note on Michele Reiner
Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer, movie producer and LGBTQ+ rights advocate, the Associated Press reported. She met Rob Reiner while he was directing When Harry Met Sally…, and they had three children together. In an AP report about a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Rob Reiner recalled how meeting her affected the film’s ending: “Originally, Harry and Sally didn’t get together,” he said. “But then I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works.”
That context is a small part of the couple’s story; Jake and Romy’s statement asked that their parents be remembered for their lives and the love they gave.
