He also wanted more time for family and business while continuing to work in football. The move was announced as complete in August 2025; a March 2026 report described him as living in Dubai.
Why did Rio Ferdinand move to Dubai?
“Lifestyle, safety, weather and just a new life” was Ferdinand’s summary of the appeal. In an interview with The National, published August 21, 2025, he made clear that there was no single reason behind the decision. His explanation centered on family and education, the lifestyle he wanted, and a wish to change the pace of a life long organized around football.
Family and schools
Visits to Dubai helped shape Ferdinand’s view of the city, including time there with friends of his wife, Kate. He also had a business in Dubai, Football Escapes. A major prompt came when he and Kate visited schools: Ferdinand said he felt the education system suited their children, describing its curriculum as English but delivered differently. That was his personal assessment, not an independent comparison of schools in Dubai and the UK.
Lifestyle and a fresh chapter
Ferdinand described safety and weather, alongside lifestyle, as part of the attraction. He also wanted a new chapter after decades in which his schedule was driven by football. He gave the example of a European match assignment taking three days once preparation and travel were included, leaving little room for other plans.

More flexibility, not an exit from football
Ferdinand said he was not leaving football. He wanted more time and headspace for his family, investments, his media company and other opportunities, while continuing to work in the sport. He also said Dubai would put him six or seven hours closer to many places in Asia, making travel to meet football fans easier.

What his explanation does—and does not—establish
Ferdinand’s comments explain his own priorities and impressions; they do not prove that Dubai is objectively safer or better for education or lifestyle than the UK. The reports cited here do not identify a particular school, visa arrangement, property purchase or tax consideration as a reason for the move.
