Mankaprr Conteh’s Rolling Stone review of JID’s fourth album, God Does Like Ugly, hears a rapper taking on the responsibilities of fatherhood and leadership while wrestling with spiritual doubt. Its central tension is the album’s most compelling idea: Christian hope set against the hardships of Atlanta, though Conteh finds that the record’s shifting moods and occasional bluntness can weaken its cohesion.
What the review says the album is about
Conteh reads God Does Like Ugly as a turning point in JID’s public identity. Rather than presenting him only as a student of rap, the review sees him stepping toward leadership in music and in life. That shift gains personal weight from the album’s fatherhood theme: Conteh connects it to the closing seconds of The Forever Story, where JID speaks with a baby, and hears the newer record as making that role more explicit.
Fatherhood and leadership intersect with the album’s spiritual questions. Conteh describes it asking what people are doing on Earth, who is in charge, and what happens after death. She places the religious imagery in Christian traditions of the Black American South, treating faith not as an abstract theme but as part of the world the album inhabits.
Faith against Atlanta’s realities
The review’s strongest interpretation comes from the friction between religious hope and material hardship. Conteh discusses incarceration, poverty, oppressive policing, and the narrow options available to people in neglected neighborhoods. In her reading, the album works best when Christian ideas of salvation meet that lived Atlanta reality—when spiritual questions remain entangled with social conditions rather than floating above them.

That contrast shapes her praise for “Community,” which she describes as a strong portrait of hardship and constrained agency, and “Of Blue,” which she calls striking. These are examples of the album’s themes landing with force in Conteh’s assessment, not claims of universal critical consensus.
Where Conteh finds the album uneven
Conteh hears the record’s changes in mood and style as a double-edged choice. At times, its shifting tracks suggest the movement of a film score; elsewhere, those same turns make the album feel disjointed. The distinction matters: a sequence can be vivid moment to moment without forming a fully cohesive album experience.

- Thematic integration: the album is most persuasive, in Conteh’s view, when spiritual imagery and social realism reinforce each other.
- Tonal disruption: some guest performances and shifts in tone interrupt its brooding atmosphere.
- Directness and density: Conteh finds some religious references overly explicit and JID’s writing wordy at points.
- Cinematic movement versus cohesion: transitions can create a score-like effect, but may also leave the album feeling scattered.
These reservations qualify rather than erase the review’s central argument: JID’s ambitions are bound up with the album’s unevenness. Conteh presents a performer reaching for authority and meaning, while noting that not every lyrical choice or tonal turn supports that reach.
How to read the “uneasy messiah” framing
The headline’s “uneasy messiah” is best understood as a critical description, not a claim that JID presents himself as a literal religious figure. Conteh links the language of leadership and salvation to the album’s questions about responsibility, faith, and hardship. The unease is essential: the review finds the record compelling not because it resolves those questions, but because it places spiritual aspiration beside conditions that make easy answers feel inadequate.
