Review: Morgan Wallen Is America’s Problem

Morgan Wallen’s 37-track 2025 album arrived amid a striking contrast: extraordinary commercial reach and continued controversy. Here’s the context behind Rolling Stone’s review title.

Maura Johnston’s Rolling Stone review, published May 17, 2025, takes its title from a question raised by Morgan Wallen’s enormous mainstream success alongside continuing controversy. The available details establish that context, but not Johnston’s full argument. The clearest way to assess the tension is to look at the album at its center, its reception, and the public record around Wallen.

What the review is about

The review concerns I’m the Problem, Wallen’s fourth studio album, released May 16, 2025. Rolling Stone’s title frames the artist as a national cultural question, not simply a musician with a new record. Without the full review text, its specific claims and conclusions cannot be reliably summarized; the title alone should not be treated as Johnston’s complete thesis.

What the album sounds like—and how much of it there is

I’m the Problem contains 37 tracks and runs nearly two hours, according to the Associated Press. The AP describes its mix as country and “dirt-rock” with hip-hop inflections; that is a reviewer’s characterization of the record, rather than a formal genre label. The length makes the album a substantial commitment, while its stylistic mix offers more than one mode of country-pop listening.

Big Loud’s album announcement identifies collaborations with Post Malone and Tate McRae, among other contributors. The track count and guest appearances help explain the project’s broad scale, but do not by themselves establish its artistic success.

How large was its commercial impact?

NPR reported that the album opened with 493,000 equivalent album units on the Billboard 200. In NPR’s May 28, 2025 report, 36 of its 37 tracks appeared on the Hot 100 in the chart week covered. These are dated measures of the release’s initial commercial reach, not claims about its present chart position.

That scale sits in sharp contrast with the controversy often discussed alongside Wallen’s career. The numbers show that the controversy did not prevent a major commercial debut; they do not reveal why individual listeners bought or streamed the album, or what they thought of the public debate.

Why Wallen remains controversial

Coverage of Wallen’s continuing success frequently returns to a 2021 video in which he used a racial slur. NPR and the Associated Press have discussed that episode in the context of his later career. The reported event is distinct from broader arguments about what it means for his audience, country music, or American culture: those are interpretations, not facts that can be inferred from a chart result.

The title “America’s Problem” makes that broader interpretive question difficult to ignore. It can be read as connecting a superstar’s popularity to the culture around him, but without Johnston’s full text, it would be misleading to assign her a more precise position. What can be said from the documented context is that Wallen’s record-breaking reach and the public controversy coexist.

How to read the review’s central tension

  • Commercial fact: NPR documented an exceptionally large opening and near-total Hot 100 presence for the album’s tracks in one May 2025 chart week.
  • Musical description: The AP characterized the long album as blending country, dirt-rock, and hip-hop inflections.
  • Public context: Reporting connects Wallen’s success to the 2021 slur video, but audience motives and cultural implications require interpretation rather than assumption.

Together, these points clarify why the review’s title resonates: it turns a record review into a question about the relationship between celebrity, public conduct, and popularity. They do not settle that question, nor should the title be mistaken for a substitute for Johnston’s detailed argument.
