David Adjmi’s play follows an unnamed fictional band making an album in a 1970s studio. Its real subject is how artistic collaboration can turn intimate tensions into both obstacles and breakthroughs.
What is Stereophonic about?
The play follows five musicians and two engineers through a consequential year in the studio. As the band revises its music, relationships strain and shift; the work of making an album and the work of staying together become inseparable. The official Stereophonic site describes the central tension this way: “The ensuing pressures could spark their breakup — or their breakthrough.”
The chronology moves from Sausalito, California, between June 1976 and March 1977, to Los Angeles in June 1977, according to IBDB. That structure gives the story room to show creative work as a process: decisions accumulate, arrangements change, and private conflicts accompany the recording.
Is Stereophonic about Fleetwood Mac?
No. The play’s band is fictional and unnamed; Fleetwood Mac is a point of comparison, not the identity of the characters. The resemblance lies in the combustible mythology of a successful band making music amid romantic and personal fractures. The official synopsis does not present the show as a real-life account, and the available production information does not establish one-to-one equivalents between its characters and Fleetwood Mac members.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters for viewers approaching the play as documentary-style music history. Stereophonic is not a factual account of Fleetwood Mac, a dramatisation of its members’ lives, or a showcase built around the band’s catalogue. It uses an invented group to examine a broader question: what happens when the people creating art must also live and work through the tensions that shape it?
Is Stereophonic a play or a musical?
It is classified as an original play, not a musical, by IBDB. It does include original music by Will Butler, but its dramatic focus is the band’s recording process and relationships rather than a conventional musical-theatre structure. The songs are part of the fictional album taking shape in the studio.
Mark Kennedy’s Associated Press review describes Butler’s material as blues- and folk-based, suited to the late-1970s setting. Kennedy also calls the play “a hypernaturalistic meditation on the thrill, and also the danger, of collaborating on art — the compromises, the egos and the joys.” That description captures why the music serves the drama: the audience sees songs being shaped alongside the people trying to make them.
What makes the Broadway production distinctive?
Kennedy’s review emphasizes how sound and staging place the creative process at the center. Cross-talk, mufflers and the clunk of recording machinery form part of the soundscape, while the set allows audiences to observe different conversations unfolding at once. These are details from Kennedy’s critical account of the production, not a claim of firsthand attendance here.
Rank #3
The effect, as Kennedy describes it, is to make listening part of watching. The studio is not merely a backdrop for arguments or performances: its equipment, overlapping talk and repeated musical revisions help show how collaboration works under pressure. That approach gives the play a different perspective from a biography focused on a band’s public history or a documentary built around factual testimony.

The production opened at the John Golden Theatre on April 19, 2024. Its Broadway engagement has ended, but the official records disagree about the final performance date: the Tony Awards page gives July 7, 2024, while IBDB records the production through January 12, 2025. The discrepancy should be kept explicit rather than resolved by choosing one date without further evidence.

How to think about it alongside music documentaries
For viewers drawn by the Fleetwood Mac connection, the useful distinction is not whether Stereophonic tells the “real story,” but what kind of story it tells. A documentary, memoir or biography can address real people and events; Adjmi’s play invents a band and uses the studio as a dramatic lens on collaboration. Its interest is in the craft and pressure of making music, not in establishing the history of Fleetwood Mac.
That makes the comparison a doorway rather than a promise. The show evokes the conflicts listeners associate with rock-band recording lore while keeping its characters and events fictional.
