René Angélil, Céline Dion’s husband and longtime manager, died at his home in Las Vegas on January 14, 2016, at age 73. Dion’s official announcement said he died after a long battle with cancer and asked the family’s privacy to be respected.
When and how did René Angélil die?
Dion’s website announced on January 14, 2016: “René Angélil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer.” The notice did not identify a cancer subtype. Dion’s announcement also said the family requested privacy.

The Television Academy lists Angélil’s birth date as January 16, 1942, and his death date as January 14, 2016, confirming he died two days before his 74th birthday. CBS News reported at the time that he had throat cancer; that detail was not included in Dion’s official announcement.
Who was René Angélil to Céline Dion?
Angélil was both Dion’s husband and the manager who guided her career for more than 30 years, according to the Television Academy. Their professional relationship began after he heard her sing at an audition. The Academy says he first encountered her when she was 12, met her for an audition in 1981, and that they began dating when she was 19. It also records that he mortgaged his home to help finance her first record. The Television Academy’s profile describes his career and their early partnership.

Dion’s official biography dates their wedding to December 17, 1994, at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal. They had three sons: René-Charles, Nelson and Eddy. Dion’s biography names their children and traces the couple’s work together.
What was Angélil’s career and professional significance?
Before becoming a manager and producer, Angélil performed with the pop group the Baronets in the 1960s, according to the Television Academy. His work with Dion extended from her early recordings to major international releases and her Las Vegas shows.

Dion’s biography says their first Las Vegas production ran from March 25, 2003, through December 15, 2007, with more than 700 performances for 3 million spectators. The scale of that run is one measure of the career he helped manage; it should not be mistaken for a separate claim about his individual role in each performance or milestone.

Angélil was buried at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal on January 22, 2016, the same basilica where he and Dion had married. Dion’s official biography records the burial date and location.
