The Supreme Court of India cancelled actor Darshan Thoogudeepa’s bail on 14 August 2025, setting aside a Karnataka High Court order that had granted bail to him and six other accused. The New Indian Express reported that Darshan was arrested in Bengaluru later that day. The Supreme Court’s decision was about bail, not a determination of guilt.

Did the Supreme Court cancel Darshan Thoogudeepa’s bail?

Yes. In appeals brought by the State of Karnataka, the Supreme Court set aside the Karnataka High Court’s common order of 13 December 2024 granting bail to seven accused, including Darshan. The case was registered as Crime No. 250 of 2024 at Kamakshipalya Police Station in Bengaluru. The Supreme Court judgment records that 17 people were implicated after investigation and that a charge sheet and two supplementary charge sheets were filed.

The New Indian Express reported that Darshan was arrested in Bengaluru at about 4 p.m. on 14 August 2025, after the bail order was set aside. Cancellation of bail returns an accused to custody; it is not a conviction or a finding that the allegations have been proved.

What is the Renukaswamy case about?

According to the prosecution account summarized in the Supreme Court’s bail judgment, Renukaswamy, a 33-year-old chemist from Chitradurga, had sent obscene messages to Pavithra Gowda. The prosecution alleged that a group conspired to trace, abduct and kill him. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.

The New Indian Express reported that Renukaswamy was allegedly abducted and killed on 8 June 2024, and that his body was found in a stormwater drain the following day. Darshan, Pavithra Gowda and others were arrested in June 2024. A charge sheet was filed in September, and Darshan received interim medical bail in October before the High Court granted regular bail to seven accused in December.

Why did the Supreme Court set aside the bail order?

The State challenged the High Court’s bail analysis, making submissions about the seriousness of the alleged offences, the evidence and risks to a fair trial. The accused persons, in turn, challenged the evidence and raised alleged procedural problems with their arrests and detention. The judgment records those positions as arguments made by the parties.

The Supreme Court allowed the State’s appeals and set aside the bail order. That outcome changed the accused persons’ bail status; it did not resolve the disputed evidence or decide whether any accused was guilty.

What is Darshan’s latest reported bail status?

India Today reported that on 15 May 2026 the Supreme Court rejected a subsequent bail plea, directed day-to-day trial hearings and allowed a fresh approach after one year if the trial had made no significant progress. On 24 June 2026, the outlet reported that Darshan sought clarification that the order would not prevent an earlier application based on new developments. The outcome of that clarification request and the latest trial status are not established by the available reporting; a subsequent court order would be needed to confirm them.
