She first appeared in the Season 3 finale, “The One at the Beach.” Garr died on October 29, 2024, at 79; the Associated Press reported that publicist Heidi Schaeffer said she died of multiple sclerosis, surrounded by family and friends.
Who did Teri Garr play on Friends?
Garr played Phoebe Abbott, the biological mother of Phoebe Buffay, Lisa Kudrow’s character. The Los Angeles Times identifies her as Phoebe Abbott Sr. and describes the mother as estranged from her daughter. Their meeting gives Phoebe’s backstory a face: a family connection she had not grown up with, now part of the ensemble’s present-day life.
Garr’s comic presence made the role a memorable guest turn rather than a change to the show’s central cast. The arc also brought a new dimension to Phoebe’s history without shifting the series away from its six friends.
How many Friends episodes was Teri Garr in?
The Los Angeles Times reports that Garr appeared in three episodes. Her first appearance was in the Season 3 finale, “The One at the Beach,” when Phoebe reconnects with her birth mother during a group vacation. That is the established starting point for Garr’s arc; the reporting cited here does not provide a complete episode list or detailed account of all three appearances.
What happened to Teri Garr?
Garr died on October 29, 2024, aged 79. The Associated Press reported that her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, said Garr died of multiple sclerosis, with family and friends around her. After making her diagnosis public, Garr became a spokesperson for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
In AP’s account, Garr said she first noticed a “little beeping or ticking” in her right leg in 1983; symptoms later spread to her right arm. By 1999, they had become severe enough that she consulted a doctor and received an MS diagnosis. She kept the diagnosis private for three years. In a 2003 interview, she explained: “I was afraid that I wouldn’t get work.” In 2005, discussing how people treated her after the diagnosis became public, she said, “You have to find your center and roll with the punches because that’s a hard thing to do: to have people pity you.” These are details from AP’s biographical reporting, not medical advice.

How the Friends role fits Garr’s career
Garr’s career stretched well beyond the sitcom. The Associated Press reported that she began as a dancer, including chorus work in nine Elvis Presley films such as Viva Las Vegas, before moving into screen roles. She became widely known for playing Inga in Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein and Sandy Lester, a struggling actor, in Tootsie. The Washington Post reported that her performance in Tootsie earned an Academy Award nomination.
Against those film roles, Phoebe Abbott was a brief guest appearance, not a regular part. Its appeal lies in the contrast: Garr could make a small part feel vivid, and her arrival gave the show’s most idiosyncratic friend a new family story to play. Screenwriter Cinco Paul, quoted by AP, captured that quality: “Never the star, but always shining. She made everything she was in better.”
