In Nadeem F. Paracha’s remembrance, his friendship with guitarist Aamir Zaki began in Karachi in 1987, through music rather than a formal interview. Paracha recalls being captivated by Zaki’s playing, urging him toward stardom, and—after decades of friendship—never having the coffee conversation they discussed near the end of Zaki’s life.
A friendship that began with a song
Paracha dates the beginning of the friendship to 1987, when he heard The Scratch’s “The Bomb” and then met Zaki in Karachi. A year later, he saw The Scratch perform and remembers being struck by Zaki’s guitar playing. His account is intimate and subjective: it records what Paracha heard, witnessed and felt, rather than presenting an independently reported biography.
Paracha recalls Zaki playing a yellow-and-white Fender Stratocaster and moving among blues, jazz and progressive rock, with Eric Clapton among his influences. He also remembers Zaki’s interest in fretless bass. These details sketch a musician whose curiosity reached beyond the boundaries of a single band or pop style.
Ambition and the limits of the pop scene
Paracha portrays Zaki as exceptionally gifted and ambitious, but frustrated by the demands and compromises of mainstream pop. That tension informs his account of Zaki’s early band projects and his short spell with one of Pakistan’s most prominent pop groups.

Just In Case and Vital Signs
Paracha writes that Zaki formed Just In Case with a drummer and bassist in 1993, but the band did not take off. He recalls Zaki joining Vital Signs in 1994–95 and leaving after seeking equal shares of profits and royalties, which band leader Rohail Hyatt refused. This is Paracha’s recollection of a private dispute, not an independently verified account of the negotiations.
In the retrospective, Paracha quotes Zaki saying, “No musician can keep up with what I want to do, and how I want to play.” The line captures the ambition Paracha remembers, but it remains a quotation relayed within his personal account.

A guitarist who also made instruments
Zaki’s relationship with guitars extended beyond playing them. A later Dawn Images feature published in 2018 reported that photographer Fayyaz Ahmed restored Zaki’s modified Stratocaster and described Zaki’s guitar modifications and handmade instruments. That reporting adds context to Paracha’s memories of a guitarist deeply engaged with his instrument, while standing apart from the personal essay.
Music beyond the spotlight
In the years after Vital Signs, Paracha recounts, Zaki spent time in the United States playing blues and jazz bars, then returned to Pakistan, taught music and sometimes performed at small gigs. In 2015, he appeared on Coke Studio playing guitar on a song by Zohaib Hassan.

Paracha’s account suggests that Zaki’s musical life continued even when it did not match the visibility or commercial success he had once been urged to pursue. The essay’s contrast is not between talent and its absence, but between the scale of Zaki’s ambitions and the opportunities available to him in the mainstream scene.
How colleagues remembered him
Paracha’s recollections are personal, but other musicians also spoke about Zaki after his death. In a Dawn Images collection of industry tributes published June 5, 2017, musician and collaborator Alamgir recalled their rapport on stage: “The understanding that we had when we played together was unbelievable.” It is one colleague’s testimony, not a substitute for the broader story of Zaki’s career.

The conversation that never happened
Dawn reported that Zaki died on June 2, 2017, aged 49. Paracha’s remembrance, originally published June 3, 2017, closes not on a career summary but on a personal absence: he and Zaki had discussed meeting for coffee, but the conversation never took place.
That unfinished plan gives the essay its emotional weight. Paracha had spent years encouraging Zaki to become a star; what remains most vivid in his account is not a final verdict on fame, but the friendship that began with a song and the ordinary meeting they did not get to have.
