Red One Review: Dwayne Johnson’s Joyless Dud Is an Epic Christmess That Takes Itself Too Seriously

Red One turns a kidnapped Santa into a sprawling action spectacle, but its effects and mythology often smother the funnier Christmas comedy underneath.

Red One has a promising comic setup: Santa is kidnapped, and a North Pole security chief must join forces with a bounty hunter to bring him home. But the film’s elaborate mythology and effects-heavy spectacle often crowd out the lighter, funnier holiday adventure that premise suggests. That is the central frustration in this review—not a claim that every viewer will dislike it.

What is Red One about?

Directed by Jake Kasdan, the 2024 holiday action comedy begins with Santa Claus’s abduction. Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), the North Pole’s security chief, teams up with bounty hunter Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to find him. The setup turns Christmas into the launchpad for an action spectacle, with a mythology that reaches well beyond a familiar Santa story.

The premise is knowingly oversized, and that could have been the source of the film’s comic appeal. Instead, its considerable world-building and visual effects can make the adventure feel more solemn and busy than playful.

Why does Red One feel joyless?

Spectacle overwhelms the comedy

In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle argues that the effects and expanded mythology bury the more entertaining movie implied by the premise. His concise verdict: “There is a better, funnier movie underneath all the CGI gloss.” The criticism is not that a Christmas action film should avoid spectacle; it is that the spectacle does not consistently serve the comedy or make the characters more engaging.

The story takes its elaborate setup too seriously

A kidnapped Santa and a rescue mission invite absurdity. But when the film keeps layering on mythology and action-movie scale, the comic premise has less room to breathe. The result can feel overcomplicated rather than delightfully excessive: the film asks viewers to follow its world-building without reliably rewarding them with the warmth or comic energy that would make the detours worthwhile.

The pacing has to carry a lot of machinery

The rescue plot, action sequences and mythology all compete for attention. That density can make the film feel less nimble than its buddy-comedy pairing promises. The frustration is a matter of emphasis: the ingredients for a lighter movie are present, but the effects-led approach often takes precedence.

Is Red One worth watching?

If you want a big, unusual holiday action movie and enjoy seeing Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans share the screen, the premise may be enough to make it a seasonal watch. If your priority is a nimble comedy or a Christmas story with warmth at its center, the film’s overbuilt mythology and self-serious spectacle may be a poor fit. The AP review supports that critical judgment, but it is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

What did critics and audiences think?

The Rotten Tomatoes page surfaced in 2026 showed a 29% Tomatometer based on 186 reviews and an 89% Popcornmeter based on more than 5,000 verified ratings. Those are time-sensitive aggregator snapshots, not permanent measures of the film, and the gap shows that critics and verified audience raters responded very differently. In its 2024 opening-weekend report, the Associated Press cited a then-current Rotten Tomatoes score of 33%, illustrating how the critic figure can change over time.

The AP also reported an A- CinemaScore during the theatrical launch. That opening-period audience grade offers another signal distinct from critics’ reviews, but it does not settle whether the film will work for an individual viewer.

Where can you watch Red One?

Prime Video has a listing for the film, and Amazon’s studio announcement described it as a Prime Video exclusive. Availability and access terms can vary by market and change, so check the listing for your region. The surfaced Prime Video listing gives a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes, while the Associated Press review reports 133 minutes; the discrepancy may reflect the listing, territory or edition, so confirm the runtime shown for the version you plan to watch.

Is Red One appropriate for kids?

The Associated Press lists the film as PG-13 for action, some violence and language. That rating description is a useful starting point for families, but whether the content suits a particular child depends on the child and household.

What its theatrical launch does—and does not—show

The Associated Press reported an estimated North American opening weekend of $34.1 million across 4,032 screens. Those are historical launch figures; they do not establish the film’s lifetime theatrical performance, profitability or later streaming results.
