Its strongest asset is the warmth Shashank Shende and Chhaya Kadam bring to a long-married couple, set against the distinctive landscape and speech of the Konkan.
Redu follows a stolen radio through a Konkan village
Directed by Sagar Vanjari, Redu is set in 1972. Tatu (Shashank Shende), a daily-wage farm labourer, lives with his wife, Chhaya (Chhaya Kadam), and their daughter. When Chhaya’s sister arrives from Mumbai with a battery-operated radio, Tatu becomes attached to it. The radio is stolen, and Tatu and Chhaya set out to find the thief.
The radio matters for more than its ability to play music and news. In a community where people own little, it gives Tatu a new source of pleasure and changes how others see him. Ramnath compares the missing-radio story to Santosh Sivan’s 1996 children’s film Halo, in which a girl searches for her lost stray dog; that is the reviewer’s comparison, not an established claim about the filmmakers’ intentions.
Why the story can feel too slight
Ramnath finds the premise appealing but the treatment simplistic, arguing that the story is too skimpy to sustain 111 minutes. The screenplay tries to build depth through its locations and relationships, but the film’s restrained scope may leave viewers wanting more narrative development.

That limitation is balanced by the film’s sense of place. The review praises the visual richness of the rural landscape and the lilt of dialogue in local Konkani-inflected Marathi. These details give the story texture even when its central plot remains small.
Shende and Kadam make the marriage feel lived-in
For Ramnath, the performances are the film’s main strength. Shende’s Tatu grumbles; Kadam’s Chhaya listens and answers him in kind. Their exchanges suggest the habits and affection of a couple who have spent a long time together, making the domestic relationship more affecting than the plot alone might promise.

Who may appreciate Redu
Ramnath’s review points toward a film best approached as a character-led rural fable rather than a tightly plotted mystery. Viewers drawn to regional language and setting, understated performances, and the rhythms of everyday married life may find its warmth rewarding. Those looking for a story with enough incident to fill a brisk feature may share the reviewer’s concern that the premise is stretched across too much time.
