Ken Liu’s short story “The Paper Menagerie” became the first work of fiction to win the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy awards, according to Liu’s official biography. To read it, look for Liu’s collection The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories: the story is included in that book, rather than offered as a standalone edition in the sources listed here.
Why “The Paper Menagerie” stands out
Liu describes the story as the first piece of fiction to win three genre literary awards: the Hugo, the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award. The collection’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, likewise identifies it as the only story to win all three. These sources support the three-award distinction, but do not establish the award years or categories, so those details are not included here.

The recognition is a useful way into the story, not a complete account of what makes it worth reading. Simon & Schuster’s discussion guide invites readers to consider communication and translation, family relationships, cultural identity, historical memory and assimilation. Those are productive discussion angles, not a definitive interpretation.

What else is in the collection
The book is a collection, not a single-story volume. Simon & Schuster highlights other included work such as “Mono No Aware,” “The Waves” and “All the Flavors,” alongside “The Paper Menagerie.” The publisher presents some of the collection’s stories as award-winning or award-finalist work.

The reading-group guide also points readers toward how meaning changes across written language, oral histories and paper figures. Its questions about mistranslation and the distinctions among adaptation, assimilation and cultural abandonment can help a group discuss the story without treating one reading as the only possible one.
