Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk said in January 2024 that the band would not tour or play live again. That statement ended the prospect of further live performances as he described it, but did not say whether the group had formally dissolved or whether its members might record music together in the future.
What did Rage Against the Machine announce?
On January 3, 2024, Wilk addressed fans in a post about the band’s future. “I want to let you know that RATM (Tim, Zack, Tom and I) will not be touring or playing live again,” he wrote. He added: “I don’t want to string people or myself any further.” CBS News and the Los Angeles Times reported the statement the next day. CBS News and the Los Angeles Times covered the announcement.

So, if “break up” means no more concerts, Wilk’s answer was clear: the band would not play live again. If it means a formal dissolution of the group, the statement did not confirm one. The reports also left open whether Rage Against the Machine might make music together without touring.
Why were the reunion shows canceled?
The group’s reunion tour finally began in July 2022 after pandemic delays. During the Chicago performance, singer Zack de la Rocha injured his left Achilles tendon. On October 4, 2022, the band’s official site published his statement canceling the remaining 2023 North American dates. The band’s official site carried his announcement.

De la Rocha described the injury as a severe tendon tear and said only 8% of the tendon remained intact. He explained that recovery affected basic functionality as well as his ability to perform. The injury explains the canceled dates; it does not, by itself, establish what the band decided about its long-term future.
How the band reached this point
- 1991–2000: The band formed in 1991 and released its self-titled debut album in 1992. Singer Zack de la Rocha left in 2000; CBS News reported his explanation that the group’s decision-making process had failed.
- 2007–2011: The band reunited in 2007 and toured through 2011.
- 2019–2022: Rage Against the Machine announced a reunion tour planned for 2020. The pandemic delayed it until 2022; the tour began in July, and de la Rocha was injured during the Chicago show.
- October 2022: De la Rocha announced the cancellation of the remaining 2023 North American dates.
- January 2024: Wilk said the band would not tour or play live again.
The formation and release dates are reported by CBS News; the reunion and tour context is also covered by the Los Angeles Times.

What remains unresolved?
Wilk made a specific statement about touring and live performances. He did not announce that the band had formally broken up, nor did he address whether the members might record new music. In March 2023, guitarist Tom Morello told the Los Angeles Times that news about future shows would come from the band collectively: “If there are Rage shows, if there are not Rage shows, you’ll hear from the band. I do not know. When there is news, it will come from a collective statement from the band.”
The January 2024 reports said the other members had not publicly commented on Wilk’s statement at that time. The latest specific status statement covered here is from January 2024; it should not be read as evidence of a newer announcement or as proof that the band has dissolved.
