What happened between Springsteen and Trump?
Springsteen’s remarks in Manchester
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band opened their Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester, England, on May 14, 2025. Before performing “My City of Ruins,” Springsteen spoke about free speech, dissent, workers, civil rights, U.S. allies and government accountability. He said: “In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. This is happening now.” Those words document Springsteen’s stated political view; they are not independent verification of the policies he criticized. His official transcript records the remarks and the other spoken segments from the concert. Read Springsteen’s official Manchester transcript.
Trump’s reported response
Rolling Stone reported that Trump responded on Truth Social with insults and what the publication characterized as a seeming threat concerning Springsteen’s return to the United States after the European tour. That description is based on Rolling Stone’s reporting; the reviewed source set does not include a direct archived copy of the post. See Rolling Stone’s account of Trump’s response.

Why did Pearl Jam cover “My City of Ruins”?
The timing made the performance look like a response to the dispute, and the audience’s chant reinforced that reading. But Vedder did not refer to the Springsteen–Trump situation before the song, according to Rolling Stone. It is therefore more accurate to say that fans and coverage interpreted the choice as solidarity than to claim that Vedder confirmed that intent.
Vedder did criticize personal attacks and threats during a Pittsburgh concert, telling the audience, “The name-calling is so beneath us,” according to the Associated Press. AP reported that comment in the context of his response to personal attacks and threats; it was not identified as an explanation of the Springsteen cover.
