The clown is the face most people recognize, but it is not a complete explanation of what the entity is. Stephen King’s novel follows the Losers’ Club from a childhood confrontation with the horror to their adult return when children are murdered in Derry again.
Who is Pennywise, and is Pennywise the same as It?
In King’s novel, “It” is the larger antagonist: a monstrous evil that preys on Derry’s children. Pennywise the Dancing Clown is its famous identity. King’s official character list also associates Pennywise with the name Bob Gray, and describes the clown as ageless. The publisher’s summary calls the antagonist “an evil without a name.” Those descriptions establish the distinction between the entity and its clown identity, but do not provide a complete account of the entity’s origin or metaphysical nature.

So Pennywise is not simply a human serial killer wearing a clown costume. The clown is the recognizable form associated with a larger supernatural threat. King’s official novel page and character list provide the basis for that distinction: Stephen King’s official It page.

The adults return to Derry
Years later, the Losers have grown up and are living apart. When children are murdered in Derry again, Mike Hanlon calls the group back to face the threat. The novel interweaves the childhood and adult timelines rather than telling the children’s story and then simply moving on.
Simon & Schuster’s publisher page summarizes the creature’s attacks and the group’s return, and lists the novel in several formats: Simon & Schuster’s It page.

Why does the novel move between childhood and adulthood?
The two time periods are central to the way the story is told: the children confront the horror, grow up, and return when it threatens Derry again. King has described the idea behind the book as beginning with the image of a troll beneath a bridge, then expanding to a city of tunnels and sewers. He also connected the book’s structure to the image of a corridor linking the children’s and adults’ sections of a library. These are King’s stated inspirations; broader readings of what the structure means are interpretation.
Is Pennywise the same in the novel and the screen adaptations?
The novel is the source for the book’s canon. The television and film versions adapt it, and IT: Welcome to Derry expands a vision established by the feature films. A detail in one screen version should not automatically be treated as a fact about the novel or as part of one universal continuity.
