Vikings: Valhalla was BGR writer Andy Meek’s personal pick for the Netflix release week of July 6–13, 2024. That recommendation is now historical: Season 3 arrived on July 11, 2024, and completed the series. For viewers drawn to historical fiction, political conflict and violent action, it offers a finished story centered on three Viking figures.
What the July 2024 recommendation was
Andy Meek’s July 5, 2024 BGR article singled out Vikings: Valhalla from Netflix’s releases scheduled for the following week. It was his own watch recommendation, not an objective ranking or a current release-calendar tip. His article is available at BGR.
What is Vikings: Valhalla about?
Netflix describes the series as a sequel set about a hundred years after Vikings, following a new generation of heroes. Its early-11th-century historical-fiction story focuses on Leif Erikson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir and Harald Sigurdsson. Netflix’s series listing characterizes it as a drama and uses descriptors including violent, dark, adventurous, historical and ensemble; those labels describe the catalog entry, not a guarantee that every viewer will find its tone suitable.
Season 3 completes the story
Netflix released the third season on July 11, 2024, and it is the show’s final season. The story picks up seven years after Season 2: Freydís leads Jomsborg, while Leif and Harald have reached Constantinople. Season 3 also brings in Erik the Red and the Byzantine general Maniakes. Netflix Tudum’s season announcement says co-creator and executive producer Jeb Stuart brought the series to a creative conclusion.

Stuart said: “I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald, and Freydís. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today, and we have done just that.”
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: viewers looking for a completed historical action drama, with a saga-style ensemble and a focus on leadership, ambition and conflict.
- Consider the tone: Netflix lists violent and dark content descriptors, so it may not suit viewers seeking a gentle or family-friendly historical series.
- Know the connection: it follows Vikings a century later with a new generation of characters; it is a sequel rather than an unrelated standalone documentary.
