Where did the shirtless photo come from?
The image came from a postgame locker-room scene shown in footage from Inside the NFL. Mahomes was addressing his teammates after the Chiefs beat Baltimore in the AFC Championship game on January 28, 2024. Good Morning America identified the image as a still from the CW series, while Sports Illustrated covered the locker-room clip and the online reaction.
What did Mahomes say about the viral image?
On January 31, 2024, Mahomes responded on X with a joke about the unflattering frame. Good Morning America reported his first post as: “Yoooo why they have to do me like that!?!?!?” followed by laughing emojis and “#DadBodSZN.” He then quoted the post and wrote, “Like i got kids!!!!” with laughing emojis. The lowercase “i” is reproduced as reported by the outlet.
What did he say later about the “dad bod” label?
In an April 16, 2024 interview with TIME, Mahomes returned to the subject in a more direct way: “I definitely have the dad bod a little bit.” He added, “I’ll also say I have a great body for a quarterback. You’ve got to have some padding in there to take the hits that we take.” The remarks were part of a later interview, not his immediate January response. TIME’s interview provides that follow-up.

What the moment does—and does not—show
The clip, the jokes and Mahomes’ later comments explain how he responded to the viral label. A single still image does not establish anything about his health, conditioning or athletic performance, and the coverage does not supply a relevant study or statistic to support such conclusions.
