The PEOPLE headline describes a reporter speaking with a family member the day after Nicole Brown Simpson was murdered. The original report is not available in the records identified here, so its reporter, interviewee, publication date and conversation cannot be verified. Later case records offer context for June 13, 1994, but they do not establish what happened in that PEOPLE interview.

What the headline establishes—and what it does not

The title, “I Spoke to a Family Member the Day After Nicole Brown Simpson’s Murder,” presents a first-person reporting account. On its own, it does not identify the reporter or the family member, or provide the interview’s wording. Without the original PEOPLE story, those details should not be inferred from later testimony.

What happened on June 12 and 13, 1994

UPI’s 1995 case chronology dates the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman to June 12, 1994. The following day, June 13, O.J. Simpson returned to Los Angeles from Chicago, was briefly handcuffed by police and went to police headquarters for questioning, according to the same chronology. UPI records charges and an arrest on June 17.

What Denise Brown later testified

In a May 2, 1996 deposition excerpt hosted in an archival Simpson-case transcript collection, Denise Brown recalled that police called her family’s residence at about 6:15–6:30 a.m. on June 13, 1994. She said her mother answered and she took the phone. This is later testimony by Denise Brown; it does not show that she was the family member interviewed for the PEOPLE story or establish what that reporter asked.

Why the distinction matters

A later deposition and a contemporaneous interview are different records. The deposition can help place a police call in the morning after the killings, but it cannot stand in for an unavailable PEOPLE article. The transcript archive is hosted by Jack Walraven and is not identified as an official court website. The original PEOPLE report is needed to establish the journalist’s account and its details.
