Nurses who worked on The Pitt say its emergency-department pressures feel recognizable: violence against staff, crowded conditions, long waits and the strain of continuing to care for patients amid them. Their comments are informed professional perspectives, not a scene-by-scene audit. A National Nurses United survey offers separate, time-bounded evidence about workplace violence reported by nurses.

What nurses who worked on The Pitt recognize

Jamie Lynn Watkins, RN, a nurse at Sollis Health who played Nurse Jamie, called the series “the most realistic portrayal of an emergency department that I’ve seen on television.” She and other nurses who worked on the production joked that it “almost felt too real.” Those are Watkins’s impressions, not the result of a formal comparison of medical dramas or an independent review of every clinical detail.

Joe Sachs, MD, an emergency physician and consulting physician for the series, described its approach this way: “Because we’re current and we’re accurate with our medicine, as a side effect, people learn and it can change people’s lives.” His perspective helps explain the production’s intent, but it does not establish that every scene is medically exact.

Workplace violence is a concern beyond the drama

Ambar Martinez, RN, who played Nurse Kim and works at Sollis Health, said violence is “so much more common than I think the general public realizes.” She recounted being shoved, spat on, bitten, grabbed, groped and verbally abused. These are Martinez’s personal experiences, not a measure of how often nurses as a whole encounter each behavior.

Martinez also pointed to the staff discussion after Dana is punched, saying it spotlights how violence “has become kind of normalized, and that’s not okay.” Her comment reflects a concern about how workers and institutions respond to violence, rather than evidence that any particular incident is inevitable or acceptable.

What the 2023 survey found

National Nurses United’s February 2024 report, “High and Rising Rates of Workplace Violence and Employer Failure to Implement Effective Prevention Strategies Is Contributing to the Staffing Crisis, drew on responses from nearly 1,000 nurses working in 48 states and Washington, D.C. The survey data were gathered from January 1 through December 31, 2023; the report also includes focus groups with 31 NNU members from seven states.

Rank #2

For the year before they responded, 81.6 percent of surveyed nurses said they had experienced at least one type of workplace violence. The report says 45.5 percent reported that violence on their unit had increased in the previous year.

Experience reported by surveyed nurses Share reporting it
At least one type of workplace violence in the prior year 81.6%
Violence on their unit increased in the previous year 45.5%
Verbal threats in the prior year 67.8%
Physical threats in the prior year 38.7%
Pinching or scratching in the prior year 37.3%
Slaps, punches or kicks in the prior year 36.2%

All figures are from National Nurses United’s 2024 report and describe surveyed respondents’ reports about the prior year. They are not a current annual incidence rate for all nurses, nor do they establish the cause of an individual incident.

How crowding and long waits fit into the picture

Ned Brower, RN, who played Jesse Van Horn, connects ER stress in the show to long waits and crowded conditions, summing up the changing environment with: “This isn’t your father’s ER.” The NNU report discusses staffing and prevention measures as relevant workplace context, but the survey does not prove that one specific condition caused every reported act of violence. The interview and survey therefore illuminate different things: the nurses describe what they recognize and have experienced, while the report records what its respondents said over a defined period.

What the accounts can—and cannot—tell viewers

  • They offer informed impressions of realism. Watkins’s assessment comes from her work as a nurse and on the show; it remains a personal judgment rather than a systematic accuracy study.
  • They distinguish lived experience from prevalence. Martinez’s account illustrates behaviors she says she encountered. The survey provides percentages for its respondents, with a stated period and scope.
  • They make a workplace issue visible. Watkins said, “The more we can shed light on these issues the better chance we have of ensuring caregivers for future generations.” The comments and survey point to violence and pressure as serious concerns without making television itself proof of how common a particular event is.
