In their Impel Down exchange, Ivankov makes clear that the secret gives him leverage over Crocodile—but the scene does not identify it. The popular theory that Crocodile was once a woman and Ivankov changed his sex remains unconfirmed.
What does Ivankov know about Crocodile?
At Impel Down, Ivankov says he knew Crocodile when he was a rookie and knows something from his past that Crocodile would not want exposed. Ivankov offers to keep Crocodile in line during the escape, establishing that this knowledge gives Ivankov leverage without disclosing what it is.
The exchange is identified as manga Chapter 540, collected in One Piece Volume 55. Readers can revisit the scene there; the chapter establishes the threat and the secret’s importance, not its contents.
Was Crocodile a woman before Ivankov changed him?
This is a popular fan theory, not a confirmed plot point. It proposes that Crocodile was assigned female at birth or lived as a woman, and that Ivankov used his hormone-related abilities to change Crocodile’s sex. Ivankov’s abilities make the idea conceivable, and the Impel Down scene invites speculation, but neither clue proves the theory.

The sources available for this topic do not provide confirmation from Eiichiro Oda, the manga, or an official publisher. The story’s secret remains unidentified in the material checked. The theory should not be treated as canon—or as a punchline about gender identity.

A forum user attributes a clue to Crocodile’s Vivre Card entry, paraphrased as saying Crocodile has a weakness tied to his past and owes Ivankov something Ivankov gave him. That wording has not been checked against the official card or its edition and translation, so it cannot establish what the secret is or be presented as a verified quotation.
Other explanations may be proposed by fans, but without direct textual evidence they remain speculation. Crocodile’s history—including his defeat by Whitebeard and his later plans in Alabasta—does not, by itself, identify Ivankov’s secret.
