What happened in the Noel Gallagher and Russell Brand interview?
In a review published on March 22, 2013, The Guardian described an Xfm broadcast featuring Russell Brand and Noel Gallagher joking at each other’s expense. Its review includes a line about Gallagher covering Beatles songs “in a variety of forms,” sometimes under the pretense that they are new songs. The review excerpt does not identify who said that line, so it is safest to treat it as a joke reported in the exchange rather than attribute it to Brand or Gallagher. That evidence supports a playful exchange, not a verified confession or a specific claim that Gallagher acknowledged copying a Beatles song. The headline’s “brutally honest” wording is not substantiated by the written review alone.
Which Beatles song was the joke about?
The review does not name one. Gallagher’s documented Beatles-related performances include more than one song, but those records should not be mistaken for identification of the song in the 2013 joke.

“Strawberry Fields Forever” at Union Chapel
A 2006 Observer archive report says Gallagher performed “Strawberry Fields Forever” at a Union Chapel show. That establishes a performance, not that the song was discussed in the later Brand broadcast. Read the 2006 report.
Oasis’s “I Am the Walrus”
In a transcript of a promotional interview for Oasis’s The Masterplan, Gallagher recalled the band taking up “I Am the Walrus” after Beatles songs came up during early shows in Liverpool. He characterized Oasis’s recording as “a bit faster and a lot louder” than the Beatles’ version. He also said the single version was longer and that it was edited for The Masterplan. The transcript is hosted by a fan archive rather than an original recording, so its wording is best treated as a published transcript, not independently verified audio.
