It fits “One who might use they/them pronouns, informally” and “Genderqueer identity, informally.” Crossword answers depend on the specific puzzle, so check the date, publisher, letter count and crossing letters before entering it.
Answers to the two documented clues
| Clue | Length | Answer | Puzzle details |
|---|---|---|---|
| “One who might use they/them pronouns, informally” | 4 | ENBY | October 8, 2026, New York Times crossword. The puzzle page names Rachel Grey and John Kugelman as constructors and Will Shortz as editor. See the dated puzzle entry. |
| “Genderqueer identity, informally” | 4 | ENBY | September 23, 2026, New York Times clue, as dated by Crossword Chef. See the clue entry. |
How to check whether ENBY fits your puzzle
Both cited clues specify four letters and include “informally.” Those details support ENBY for these entries, but they do not establish that every clue mentioning non-binary identity, genderqueer identity or pronouns has the same answer.
- Check the exact wording. A qualifier such as “informally” is part of the clue and helps explain why this entry fits.
- Confirm the enumeration. ENBY has four letters; a different length rules it out.
- Use crossing letters. Make sure the filled letters agree with the intersecting answers.
- Identify the puzzle. Compare its date and publisher with a source for that specific entry rather than relying on a similar clue from another puzzle.
No competing answer is established for either cited clue. If ENBY conflicts with the grid, recheck the crossings and puzzle edition rather than assuming an alternative.
What ENBY means in these clues
In these examples, ENBY is used informally for a non-binary person or identity. The clue wording matters: “One who might use they/them pronouns” describes a possible connection, not a rule that all non-binary people use those pronouns. The two entries demonstrate answers to particular crossword clues, not a complete guide to gender identity or a universal crossword convention.

Inclusive wording outside the crossword grid
The Canadian Translation Bureau advises: “When you’re writing to someone whose gender is unknown, to someone who is non-binary or to a group of people of diverse genders, it’s important to write inclusively and omit any references to gender.” Its Inclusionary guidance presents possible solutions rather than absolute answers; the Bureau says context and judgment matter, and that the tool is not exhaustive. This is guidance for inclusive writing, not a crossword-specific rule.
