When did Dome Subiaco reopen?
The café closed in mid-2021. In August 2023, Dome Cafe Group chief executive, managing director and co-owner Nigel Oakey said plans had been submitted for a refresh and that the team hoped to reopen that summer, subject to council approval. The City of Subiaco later confirmed on 12 September 2024 that Dome Subiaco was back with a new look and expanded seating. That is the latest verified reopening milestone in the available official information; it does not establish the café’s operating status or hours today.
What was planned for the relaunch?
The proposal described in 2023 was more than a restart of the previous operation. It included extending the dining area and adding alfresco seating along Seddon Street, making the café face more toward the upgraded street while retaining its Rokeby Road entrance. In July 2023, the City said the refit would make use of adjacent alfresco areas. Its September 2024 update confirms a new look and expanded seating, but does not itemize the final design or confirm every detail of the earlier proposal.
Why was the Seddon Street upgrade important?
Oakey’s commitment to return was tied to the street’s revitalisation. In October 2021, the City reported that Oakey had said he would agree to a new lease and reinvest in the location if the City committed to activating Seddon Street. The City had endorsed a concept for a pedestrian-oriented public hub, intended for community use and events.

By 2023, Oakey described the street’s rejuvenation, the landlord partnership and council follow-through as reasons for making a long-term recommitment. He also described a difficult period for the area involving local decline and disruptive construction, with COVID adding to the pressure. The closure and return therefore sit within a broader story of a changing street and a conditional business decision, rather than a simple pandemic-only explanation.

The City’s September 2024 update confirms the venue’s return by that date and reports expanded seating. The earlier proposal supplies the broad intended changes, but the official update does not provide an exact seat count, final architectural specification, current menu, prices, hours or live operating status as of 8 October 2026. Check a current venue listing or contact the café directly for visit-specific details.

PerthNow’s 17 August 2023 account described the café’s time at the site as nearly 24 years. It also attributed a $2 million contribution to the City for the street overhaul. Oakey’s reflections on 22 years of business figures—including his description of the first 12 years as fantastic and the second half as less so—were his characterization, not an audited performance dataset.
